D'Oliveiras Madeira

doliveras-madeira

D’Oliveira is one of the greatest of the classic Madeira shippers. Founded in 1850, and an amalgamation of firms dating back to 1820, it is today housed in cellars in Funchal that date from 1619. Its stocks of old wines have grown over time, either through marriage with other wine-producing families, or by the purchase of other old firms.

This is a jewel of a company has always be owned by the same D’Oliviera family, who were once highly important growers in the parish of Sao Martinho.

Historic Madeira Wine Collection

D'Olveiras boasts an unparalleled wealth of great old Madeiras. Treasures include five monumental and unrivalled Verdelhos from the family’s own Sao Martinho vineyards (1850, 1890, 1900, 1905 and 1912). D’Oliveiras’ library includes some legendary Malvasias from 1875, 1895, 1900 and 1907; Buals from 1903, 1908 and 1922; and Sercials from 1862, 1875, 1910 and 1937. The family also boasts superb examples of two very rare grape varieties: Terrantez (1880) and Moscatel (1875 and 1900.).

Our Tastings

It was a privilege in June 2017 for VWP to be invited to a comprehensive madeira tasting of 30 old vintages. The DOliveira Madeiras are characterised by powerful aromatics, a lush mouthfeel and great viscosity. They have remarkable structure, and a citrus character that is essential to great Madeira.

Value

DOliveira represents the best value for Madeira often being lower in price than the other shippers. In fact, during the 1970s and 1980s, when the Madeira Wine Co. (Blandy’s, Cossart, etc.) was beginning to run low on old vintages to sell, it was to D’Oliveira that they turned.

Malvasia
Includes Leather Effect Gift Box

A rich, velvety smooth Malvazia with sweet caramel, chocolate orange and malted chocolate notes. Well judged balancing acidity teases out the finish and keeps the sweetness in check.
* Review by Sarah Ahmed- www.thewinedetective.co.uk *

Try this luscious sweet and full-bodied Madeira with stewed meat dishes with sweet and spicy elements. It pars marvellously with intense and rich dark chocolate as well as nutty and caramel desserts. Why not serve at the very end of the meal with a blue cheese such as stilton or Roquefort. Finally, a Malvasia is also delicious with cigars.

*** 94 Points Robert Parker ***

"The 1908 Boal Reserva from D’Oliveiras is an unctuous, full-bodied wine loaded with dark maple syrup, tar, leather, licorice and sweet baking spices. There is superb density here and the wine shows terrific length in an intense style. The finish is long, bright and sweet." The Wine Advocate

D'Oliveiras Madeira, 1903

Boal, Madeira

D’Oliveiras is one of the more classic Madeira shippers, and one of the few to survive from the pre-Phylloxera era. The Bastardo grape barely survived Phylloxera and basically disappeared from Maderia. Its excellent acidity supports this wine. Perfumed black walnut and green figs present on a seductive, drying palate. Bottled in 2006. "Matured in Adegas do Torreao and bottled in 2006, the Bastardo '27 has a refined, quite reticent bouquet with notes of dried honey, creme brulee and scorched earth... The palate is very elegant and harmonious, the breeding of this almost extinct grape variety really showing through.

"The 1895 Malvasia has an attractive bouquet with notes of orange peel, nougat, marmalade and walnut with noticeable volatility that detracts from its precision. The palate is medium-bodied with a lovely spicy entry with notes of nutmeg, cinnamon, white pepper and shaved ginger. It shows good substance and length, though I detect just a little dryness creeping in on the over-powering finish." The Wine Advocate

The palate is very well-balanced with impressive clarity and poise. It builds nicely in the mouth with tangy, oxidative notes that are perfectly in tune with the sweetness.
