Description
1981 Amarone della Valpolicella – Montresor (Veneto, Italy)
A fully mature, traditionally crafted Amarone with velvet warmth and layered tertiary complexity. Deep mahogany-garnet with a tawny rim. The nose is autumnal and rich: dried cherry and fig, date and prune, blood-orange peel, cocoa and espresso, walnut brittle and sweet spice, with a gentle balsamic/cedar lift. The palate is broad, silky and enveloping; dried-fruit richness framed by mellow acidity and resolved tannins. Notes of bitter chocolate, chinotto, kirsch and clove glide into a long, warming finish of dried cherry, cacao and orange zest.
Producer note: Montresor (Casa Vinicola Montresor) is one of Verona’s historic houses, long associated with classic appassimento and extended cask ageing—yielding Amarone of savoury depth, polished sweetness and age-worthy poise.
Serve: 16–18 °C. Stand upright 12–24 hours; gentle decant to remove sediment shortly before pouring.
Food pairing: Aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, blue cheeses, braised beef or oxtail, venison with polenta, dark-chocolate desserts.
