Description
The 1945 Domaine de Bommfin Bas Armagnac is a rare and deeply evocative spirit, distilled in the closing year of the Second World War and matured in oak casks for decades in the heart of Gascony. This exceptional vintage is not merely a fine Armagnac—it is a historical artefact, offering a singular glimpse into both the heritage of traditional distillation and the enduring craft of slow, patient ageing in the Bas Armagnac terroir.
Produced exclusively from Ugni Blanc and Baco grapes grown on sandy, iron-rich soils typical of the region, this Armagnac has spent many decades quietly evolving in seasoned oak barrels before bottling. In the glass, it displays a luminous chestnut-brown hue with copper highlights and a touch of green at the rim, a clear sign of long cask maturation.
The nose is extraordinarily complex and refined, offering an intricate bouquet of dried fruits—fig, prune, and candied orange peel—layered with sandalwood, old leather, pipe tobacco, polished oak, and a delicate rancio character. Beneath the surface, gentle floral undertones, antique spice, and traces of vanilla pod and dried rose emerge with time in the glass.
The palate is both powerful and poised, with a silk-like texture and remarkable depth. Notes of spiced plum, dark honey, toasted walnut, cigar box, and cocoa evolve across the tongue, supported by a fine backbone of acidity and oak tannin. The spirit unfolds slowly, revealing new dimensions of flavour with each sip. The finish is exceptionally long, lingering with hints of nutmeg, liquorice, caramelised apple, and a whisper of earthy minerality.
Distilled in a vintage that holds immense historical significance, this 1945 Armagnac embodies the resilience and beauty of time. Bottled in limited quantity, it is an extraordinary collector’s piece—rich in character, impeccable in structure, and utterly unique in origin.
Best enjoyed neat at room temperature in a tulip glass to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and evolution in the glass. Perfect as a meditative sipper, it also pairs beautifully with dark chocolate, roasted chestnuts, aged cheeses, or after a fine meal alongside a cigar.
The Domaine de Bommfin Bas Armagnac 1945 is a profound expression of time, tradition, and terroir—a spirit that offers not only exceptional drinking pleasure but a quiet sense of reverence for the past.
