Description
1961 Barbaresco – Gaja
The 1961 vintage is considered one of the landmark years in Piedmont, producing Barbaresco wines of structure, perfume and remarkable longevity. From the historic estate of Gaja, this bottle represents a formative period in the region’s modern history. Founded in 1859, Gaja has long been synonymous with quality in Barbaresco, and even before the transformative era of Angelo Gaja, the estate was recognised for meticulous vineyard selection and traditional winemaking methods that emphasised Nebbiolo’s purity and ageing potential.
Tasting Notes:
Now showing a classic brick-garnet hue with tawny highlights at the rim, the nose is beautifully evolved and aromatic. Delicate notes of dried cherry, rose petal and redcurrant are layered with leather, tobacco leaf and forest floor. With time in the glass, hints of truffle, cedar and warm spice emerge, adding depth and complexity. On the palate it is medium-bodied yet refined, with fine, resolved tannins and a vibrant thread of acidity that carries the wine gracefully. Flavours of dried red fruits, savoury earth and subtle balsamic tones lead to a long, elegant and contemplative finish.
Serving & Food Pairing:
Decant carefully to remove sediment and allow the wine to open slowly. Serve at cellar temperature. An excellent partner to braised meats, truffle-infused dishes, game or mature hard cheeses.
Summary:
A rare and distinguished bottle from one of Barbaresco’s most celebrated estates, the 1961 Gaja captures the perfume, structure and savoury nuance that define aged Nebbiolo. A compelling example of historic Piedmont winemaking and a prized addition to any serious Italian wine collection.
