Description

Barbera d’Asti DOC 1981 Calissano is a red wine from Asti, Piedmont, Italy, produced by Calissano, a winery with a long tradition of crafting expressive and age-worthy Barbera wines. The 1981 vintage exemplifies the classic character of Barbera d’Asti, with its lively acidity, vibrant fruit, and subtle complexity developed over decades of maturation.

Tasting Notes:
The wine shows a garnet-red color with orange-brick highlights at the rim, characteristic of a mature Barbera. The bouquet is elegant and layered, featuring aromas of dried cherries, plums, and raspberries, complemented by tertiary notes of leather, cedar, gentle spices, and soft earthy undertones. With gentle aeration, subtle balsamic and mineral nuances emerge, enhancing the wine’s depth and sophistication.

On the palate, it is medium-bodied with smooth, integrated tannins and balanced acidity, providing structure and freshness despite its age. The finish is long and refined, highlighting dried red fruits, gentle spices, and soft earthy notes, reflecting both careful winemaking and the expressive character of Barbera d’Asti.

Serving & Food Pairing:
Serve at around 16–18°C.

Pairs beautifully with roasted or braised meats, game, hearty pastas, risottos, and medium-aged cheeses. Its aromatic richness and structure also allow it to be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative tasting wine.

Producer:
Calissano is celebrated for producing Barbera wines that combine freshness, elegance, and long-term aging potential. The 1981 vintage demonstrates the winery’s commitment to expressing the unique character of Asti’s terroir while crafting wines that evolve gracefully over time.
