Description
1957 Barolo – Contratto (Piedmont, Italy)
The 1957 vintage represents a fascinating period in post-war Piedmont, when Barolo was crafted in a firmly traditional style, emphasising structure, acidity and long maturation in large oak casks. From the historic house of Contratto, founded in 1867 and long associated with classical Piedmontese winemaking, this bottle offers a rare glimpse into mid-20th-century Barolo and the enduring character of Nebbiolo.
Tasting Notes:
Now showing a delicate brick-garnet hue with pronounced amber highlights at the rim, the nose is finely evolved and savoury. Aromas of dried cherry, rose petal and redcurrant are interwoven with notes of leather, tobacco leaf and forest floor. With time in the glass, subtle nuances of truffle, dried herbs and gentle spice emerge. On the palate it is medium-bodied and graceful, with softened tannins and a lively thread of acidity that preserves freshness despite its age. Flavours of dried red fruits, savoury earth and delicate balsamic tones lead to a long, elegant and contemplative finish.
Serving & Food Pairing:
Decant very carefully to remove sediment and allow the wine to open slowly before serving. Best enjoyed at cellar temperature. A fine partner to braised meats, game dishes or mature hard cheeses.
Summary:
A rare and characterful Barolo from a historic Piedmont producer, the 1957 Contratto offers mature complexity and classical Nebbiolo perfume shaped by decades of bottle age. A fascinating bottle for collectors of traditional Italian wines.
