Description
Historic Barolo, perfectly mature
Giacomo Borgogno Barolo Riserva 1965 comes from one of Piedmont’s most traditional houses, famed for long cask ageing and patient cellar release. Six decades on, this is a rare chance to experience fully evolved Nebbiolo—silky, savoury and hauntingly aromatic.
Tasting profile — tar, roses & truffle
Brick-garnet with an orange rim. Classic notes of dried cherry and rose petal glide into tar, leather, balsamic herbs and porcini/truffle. The palate is elegant and refined: medium-bodied, bright acidity, tannins resolved to a fine cling, with a long, savoury finish of spice, cedar and dried red fruits. As ever with venerable Barolo, bottle variation is natural.
Condition & service
Old bottles should be handled gently. Stand upright for 24–48 hours before opening to settle sediment. Ease the cork out slowly; if fragile, use an Ah-So or Durand. Decant lightly (20–30 minutes) just to remove sediment—over-aeration can mute delicate aromatics. Serve at 17–18 °C in large Burgundy stems. Expect a fine deposit.
Pairing ideas
Superb with tajarin and white truffle, mushroom risotto, roast game bird, aged Parmigiano-Reggiano or a simple plate of finocchiona and hard cheeses. Its savoury complexity also flatters slow-braised beef or veal.
A meaningful 60th-year gift
1965 makes a distinctive 60th birthday/anniversary bottle. Borgogno periodically releases pristine library stocks; if applicable, check back-label notes for recorking/reconditioning details. A thoughtful, collectible Barolo to savour on a special night.
