    Barolo 1981 – Poderi Scanavino

The 1981 Barolo from Poderi Scanavino is a beautifully mature and traditional expression of Nebbiolo, showing the elegance and quiet complexity that only long ageing can deliver. The colour has softened to a translucent garnet with brick-orange hues at the rim, reflecting its graceful evolution.

The nose is refined and layered, offering aromas of dried rose petals, sour cherry, cranberry and redcurrant, followed by notes of leather, tobacco, forest floor and gentle truffle. Subtle hints of balsamic, anise and cedar add further depth and nuance.

On the palate, the wine is smooth, poised and harmonious. The tannins are fully resolved, giving a silky texture that carries flavours of dried red fruits, tea leaf, earthy spice and savoury herbal notes. Fresh acidity provides lift and balance, keeping the wine lively and composed despite its age.

The finish is long, elegant and quietly persistent, leaving lingering impressions of dried fruit, truffle and sweet tobacco. This is a Barolo that speaks clearly of tradition, patience and terroir.

This mature Barolo pairs beautifully with slow-braised beef, veal and lamb, as well as mushroom risotto, truffle pasta and rich ragù dishes. It also complements roasted game and aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino exceptionally well.

A refined, fully mature Barolo offering classic Nebbiolo aromatics, balance and long, savoury complexity. The 1981 Poderi Scanavino is a wonderful example of traditional Barolo ageing with grace and timeless appeal.
