Description
A rare vintage Madeira wine from Blandy’s, this 1979 Verdelho offers medium-dry complexity, perfect for collectors and fine wine enthusiasts.
Tasting Notes:
This distinguished 1979 vintage from Blandy's presents a captivating amber-bronze hue. The nose offers an intricate blend of toffee, dried apricot, mango, and roasted pineapple aromas, complemented by subtle smoky undertones. On the palate, it delivers a harmonious balance of gentle sweetness and vibrant acidity, leading to a prolonged, nutty finish with hints of walnut skin and brush strokes.
Serving & Food Pairing:
Decanting will help remove any deposit that may have occurred in bottle over time. Serve chilled at 12–14°C.This vintage Verdelho Madeira pairs exceptionally well with smoked salmon, sushi, or sashimi. It also enhances the flavors of creamy mushroom risotto, roasted poultry, or dishes featuring caramelized onions. For dessert, consider pairing it with almond tart or crème brûlée. Once opened it can be enjoyed over several months.
Cellaring Potential:
This wine is already nearly five decades old and drinking beautifully now, but its structure ensures it will remain vibrant for years to come. Store upright in a dark, fresh and dry room with constant temperature, ideally no higher than 16ºC.
Blandy's Madeira has been synonymous with quality Madeira wine for over 200 years. The Blandy's are unique in being the only family of all the original founders of the Madeira wine trade to still own and manage their own original wine company. The family has played a leading role in the development of Madeira wine throughout its long history and members of the family continue to live on Madeira, maintaining a tradition that goes back to 1811.

Reviews
International Wine & Spirit Competition: Gold Medal & "Madeira Trophy" – "Amber bronze colour, deep and intense. A whiff of oolong tea and smoky flint, followed by bright zesty grapefruit and kumquat then a nutty walnut skin savouriness. In the mouth there is a delicious raisin element to the fruit, giving a gentle spicy illusion of sweetness. A truly elegant wine with very long lingering, gentle finish."
Wine & Spirits Magazine: 94 points – "This smells like the spray off of orange zest, the wine bursting with fruit scents, then narrowing into a long, nutty finish. The flavors keep shifting and changing long after each sip, spicy, smoky and dynamic. And each sip seems to expand, then contract, then expand again in a dynamic and luscious interplay of fruit and tannins. Firm, juicy and dry, this is compelling to drink with or after a meal."
