Description
Château Clerc Milon 1996 – Pauillac, 5ème Cru Classé
The 1996 Clerc Milon is a superb example of classic Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s great Left Bank vintages. Now approaching full maturity, it shows a deep garnet core with only light brick development at the rim, indicating both elegance and remaining vitality.
The nose is refined, complex and distinctly Pauillac in character. Blackcurrant, cassis and dried plum are layered with cedar, cigar box, graphite and subtle smoky notes. As it opens, hints of leather, forest floor, bay leaf and gentle spice emerge, giving the bouquet real depth and composure.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, structured and beautifully balanced. The tannins are fine and well integrated, supporting flavours of dark berries, redcurrant, tobacco, earthy minerality and subtle oak spice. The acidity remains fresh, giving the wine lift and clarity while preserving its classical, restrained style.
The finish is long, elegant and quietly persistent, leaving lingering impressions of black fruit, cedar and gentle savoury spice. This is a wine that rewards slow, thoughtful drinking.
This mature Clerc Milon pairs superbly with roast lamb, beef Wellington, rib-eye steak, venison and duck, as well as mushroom-based dishes and classic French sauces. It also works beautifully with aged hard cheeses, particularly Comté or mature Cheddar.
A classic, fully mature Pauillac offering structure, finesse and understated power. The 1996 Clerc Milon is a fine example of a great Left Bank vintage, delivering balance, complexity and excellent drinkability today while still retaining a touch of future life.
