Description
2012 Château La Lagune
Vintage & Background
2012 in Bordeaux brought a warm growing season but also enough freshness to maintain balance. At La Lagune, the estate planted to roughly 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20–25% Merlot, and the remainder Petit Verdot, took advantage of its gravelly slopes to produce a wine with structure and finesse. The wine was aged in oak barrels, a portion of them new, to add dimension without overpowering the varietal character.
Appearance & Nose
In the glass, the 2012 shows a deep ruby-purple colour. Aromas open with rich blackcurrant and black cherry, followed by notes of saddle leather, graphite and a hint of olive tapenade. Toasty oak, vanilla and spice box details emerge with aeration.
Palate & Texture
On the palate, it is medium-to-full bodied with firm, polished tannins and a supple texture. The black fruit carries through, joined by earthy loam, minerality and spice. There is a subtle savoury herbal edge in the finish. The wine shows real elegance rather than brute force.
Maturity & Drinking Window
Though still youthful, the 2012 is entering a stage of approachability. It has sufficient structure to evolve over the next 5-10 years, developing more tertiary layers of cedar, leather and perhaps a softer undercurrent of earth and tobacco. Drinking now will reward those who enjoy Bordeaux with both fruit presence and evolving complexity.
Food Pairing & Serving Suggestions
Serve at around 16-18 °C, ideally decanted to allow the wine to breathe. It pairs well with roasted red meats, lamb, beef, game dishes, or with hearty stews. Aged cheeses will also bring out its earthier notes.
Overall Verdict
Château La Lagune 2012 is a beautifully balanced Haut-Médoc: structured, elegant, and richly fruited, with oak well integrated and a good future ahead. It offers a compelling mix of power and finesse, making it a worthy choice for collectors or anyone looking for a refined Bordeaux with ageing potential.
