Description
1984 Château La Lagune offers a gentle, fully mature expression of Haut-Médoc from a more modest Bordeaux vintage. Now four decades on, it has evolved into a delicate, savoury claret where subtlety, tertiary complexity and softness take centre stage rather than power or concentration.
In the glass, it shows a pale brick-garnet colour with a wide, amber-tinged rim. The nose is quietly evolved and inviting: dried redcurrant and cherry, cedar and cigar box, with hints of leather, autumn leaves and a touch of earthy spice. As it opens, faint notes of dried herbs and a whisper of floral character add nuance without ever feeling showy.
On the palate, it is light to medium-bodied and fully resolved, with very fine, gentle tannins. Flavours of dried red fruits, leaf tobacco, cedar and soft spice are carried by a mellow, integrated acidity, giving the wine an easy, graceful flow across the palate. The finish is modest in weight but nicely persistent, echoing savoury, earthy notes and softly fading fruit.
This is a wine best suited to those who appreciate the charm of mature, understated claret rather than richness or intensity. Serve at cellar temperature after a very careful, brief decant to remove sediment. A quietly rewarding bottle of La Lagune from 1984, ideal for contemplative drinking and for discovering the subtle side of classic Haut-Médoc.
