Description
This powerful 2003 Château Lagrange, 3ème Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Julien, reflects both the heat of the vintage and the estate’s dedication to balance and refinement. The famously hot summer of 2003 produced concentrated, ripe Bordeaux, and Lagrange delivered a structured, richly fruited wine that has matured into a supple and generous Saint-Julien with classic Left Bank character.
Tasting Notes
Deep garnet in colour, the 2003 Lagrange opens with aromas of blackberries, cassis, cedar, and sweet spice, layered with hints of tobacco and dark chocolate. On the palate, it is full-bodied with ripe, rounded tannins and a core of blackcurrant, plum, and mocha. Notes of leather and graphite add complexity, while the finish is long, warm, and satisfying. Now at peak maturity, offering both richness and elegance.
Serving and Food Pairing
Serve at 16–18°C, ideally after 1 hour of decanting to fully open its aromatics. A perfect match for roast beef, venison, or lamb shank. For vegetarian pairings, try aubergine parmigiana, mushroom Wellington, or a rich lentil stew. Hard cheeses such as aged Comté or Stilton also pair beautifully.
Winemaking
The 2003 vintage was marked by extreme heat, leading to lower yields and intensely flavoured grapes. At Château Lagrange, careful vineyard management ensured freshness and balance in the final wine. The blend, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Petit Verdot, was vinified in temperature-controlled vats and aged in French oak barrels (approximately 60% new) for 18–20 months, adding complexity and structure.
Château Lagrange, a 3ème Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Julien, is renowned for its expansive vineyard of gravel and clay soils, perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. Now under the ownership of Suntory, the estate has seen major investment in both vineyard and cellar, resulting in consistently high-quality wines that combine power, precision, and ageing potential.
