Description

The 1995 Château Léoville Poyferré is a benchmark example of mature Left Bank Bordeaux from a vintage that has aged with quiet confidence. A blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and a small portion of Petit Verdot, it reflects both the classicism of Saint-Julien and the emerging precision of modern winemaking in the mid-1990s.

In the glass, the wine presents a deep garnet core with some bricking at the rim. The bouquet is refined and evolved, offering layered aromas of blackcurrant, leather, cedar, tobacco leaf, and graphite. Subtle notes of dried herbs, forest floor, and cigar box emerge with air, contributing to a beautifully complex aromatic profile.

On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with fine-grained tannins and a sense of controlled richness. The fruit, while softened with age, still shows depth—blackberries, dark cherry, and plum—accompanied by savoury elements of spice, earthy minerals, and a touch of balsamic. A fresh line of acidity keeps the wine lively, while the finish is long and elegant, echoing with pencil shavings and gentle oak spice.

This vintage also marks an important stylistic moment for the estate, as the influence of Didier Cuvelier and consultant Michel Rolland began to reshape Poyferré’s identity. While retaining its traditional structure and terroir expression, the 1995 has a polished texture and deeper fruit profile compared to earlier decades—bridging the gap between classic claret and the richer style the estate would adopt in the 2000s.

Now fully mature, the 1995 Léoville Poyferré is drinking beautifully and is best enjoyed over the next 5–8 years. A short decant of around one hour is recommended to allow the bouquet to unfurl. Pair with roast lamb, venison, or mushroom-based dishes for an ideal food match that complements its graceful evolution.

Château Léoville Poyferré is a prestigious wine estate located in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux, France. With a history that dates back to the 18th century, the estate has established itself as a producer of exceptional red wines. Encompassing approximately 80 hectares, the vineyard benefits from gravelly and sandy soils, ideal for nurturing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot grapes. Château Léoville Poyferré's wines are celebrated for their depth, complexity, and aging potential, exhibiting ripe fruit flavors, structured tannins, and a distinct Saint-Julien character. Classified as a Second Growth (Deuxième Cru) in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, the estate continues to maintain its reputation for excellence under the ownership of the Cuvelier family. With a dedication to tradition and innovation, Château Léoville Poyferré remains a cornerstone of the Saint-Julien appellation, crafting wines that captivate enthusiasts worldwide.
