Description

The 1995 vintage of Château L’Évangile represents a confident, classic Pomerol with both power and poise. Nestled between Pétrus and La Conseillante on the famed Pomerol plateau, L’Évangile’s Merlot-dominant blend (with a small proportion of Cabernet Franc) reflects the vineyard’s deep gravel and clay terroir. The 1995 vintage was warm and structured, yielding wines with excellent aging potential and firm tannic frameworks.

Now mature, the wine opens with an inviting bouquet of ripe black cherry, plum compote, and blueberry, laced with aromas of truffle, cigar box, and violets. Hints of cocoa, leather, and pencil shavings add complexity, while subtle earthy undertones reveal its evolution in bottle. The aromatics are both rich and refined, showing the quiet opulence that characterizes great Pomerol.

The palate is full-bodied, dense, and finely textured, with velvety tannins and a layered core of dark fruit, spice, and tobacco. While still structured, the wine has softened beautifully with time, offering a rounded mouthfeel and a savoury, lingering finish marked by graphite and sweet herbs. It retains freshness and balance, showcasing L’Évangile’s ability to combine generosity with restraint.

Approaching its peak drinking window, the 1995 L’Évangile can be enjoyed now through the mid-2030s. Decant for an hour to unlock its full aromatic potential. Best served alongside dishes such as beef Wellington, roast duck, or mushroom risotto, which highlight its supple texture and depth.
