Description
The 1912 Cockburn Vintage Port, shipped by Bentley & Shaw in the UK, is a truly historic and extraordinary wine from one of the most legendary vintages in the history of the Douro. Crafted over 110 years ago, this bottle is a rare survivor of the pre–First World War era, a time when Cockburn was at the height of its reputation for producing richly fruited, structured Ports capable of ageing for more than a century. The 1912 harvest enjoyed perfect growing conditions, yielding wines of great concentration, balance, and longevity—characteristics still evident in this remarkable bottle.
In the glass, it shows a deep mahogany core with glints of amber and olive-green at the rim—classic indicators of a century-old Vintage Port in excellent condition. The bouquet is profound and multi-layered, unfolding with aromas of dried fig, date, and sultana, intertwined with molasses, dark chocolate, and roasted walnut. Subtle notes of orange peel, coffee, sweet spice, and a whisper of violet lend finesse, while the gentle rancio character reflects its immense age and long, slow maturation.
On the palate, the 1912 Cockburn is beautifully harmonious, with a silken texture and remarkable freshness for its age. Rich flavours of prune, treacle, and candied citrus are perfectly balanced by a vibrant acidity, giving lift to the wine’s natural sweetness. Savoury undertones of leather, cedar, and tobacco leaf add depth and complexity, while the once-powerful tannins have melted into a velvety softness. The finish is extraordinarily long, leaving lingering notes of spice, dried fruit, and toasted almond that seem to go on endlessly.
This is a wine to be enjoyed with reverence, ideally served slightly below room temperature in large Port glasses, and allowed to open gently in the glass rather than through extended decanting to preserve its delicate aromatics. It is perfect alongside blue cheeses, roasted nuts, or fine dark chocolate, though it is perhaps best appreciated entirely on its own. The 1912 Cockburn Vintage Port is more than just a bottle—it is a living piece of Port history and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to taste one of the most revered vintages ever produced in the Douro.
