Description
The 1912 Cockburn Vintage Port, shipped by Bentley & Shaw UK, is a truly exceptional and historic wine from one of the most celebrated vintages in the history of the Douro. Now over 110 years old, it stands as a rare survivor from the pre–First World War era, when Cockburn was widely regarded as one of the leading producers of Vintage Port. The 1912 growing season was near perfect, yielding wines with tremendous concentration, structure, and balance—qualities that have allowed this bottle to mature with remarkable grace over more than a century. Its excellent condition, with a level at top shoulder or better, makes it an extraordinary collector’s piece.
In the glass, this venerable Port displays a deep mahogany-brown core, fading to amber and olive-green at the rim—classic indicators of great age and long cask and bottle maturation. The nose is breathtaking in complexity, opening with layers of dried fig, date, and sultana, followed by molasses, dark chocolate, and roasted walnut. Delicate nuances of orange peel, exotic spice, coffee bean, and hints of violet weave through, underpinned by a refined rancio character that only emerges after many decades of careful ageing.
On the palate, the 1912 Cockburn is silky, harmonious, and profoundly elegant. Concentrated flavours of prune, black treacle, and candied citrus are balanced by a surprisingly vibrant acidity, giving lift and freshness to its natural richness. Savoury undertones of leather, cedar, and tobacco leaf add depth, while the once-firm tannins have softened to a velvety smoothness. The finish is exceptionally long and resonant, leaving echoes of sweet spice, nut, and dried fruit that linger for minutes.
This is a wine to be treated with the utmost reverence. Serve slightly below room temperature in generous Port glasses, and allow it to open slowly in the glass rather than through extended decanting to preserve its fragile aromatics. Perfect alongside blue cheese, roasted nuts, or rich dark chocolate, it is equally compelling sipped quietly on its own. The 1912 Cockburn Vintage Port is not merely a bottle—it is a liquid time capsule, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience one of the Douro’s greatest vintages at its glorious peak.
