Description

Crozes-Hermitage 1999, Perrin Frères

A mature Northern Rhône Syrah now showing the graceful evolution that comes with over two decades in bottle. The colour has softened to a brick-edged ruby, a clear sign of its development and readiness to drink.

The nose is complex and savoury, opening with dried black fruits, leather and cedar, followed by classic Syrah notes of black olive, cracked pepper and smoked meat. With time in the glass, additional layers emerge — dried herbs, earthy undertones and a touch of spice, giving the wine real depth and character.

On the palate, the wine is smooth and fully integrated, with softened tannins and a medium-bodied structure. Flavours of stewed plum, blackberry compote and savoury herbs are supported by a gentle but persistent acidity, which keeps the wine fresh and well balanced despite its age. There is a lovely harmony between fruit and tertiary notes, showing the wine at a very appealing stage of maturity.

The finish is elegant and lingering, with notes of spice, olive tapenade and a subtle earthy warmth.

Serving: Best served at 16–18°C and allowed to breathe for 20–30 minutes before drinking. A light decant will help the wine open fully. Pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, game, or dishes featuring herbs and earthy flavours, as well as mature cheeses.

Summary: A refined and fully mature Crozes-Hermitage, offering classic Syrah character with softened structure and savoury complexity. Drinking well now, this is a wine for those who appreciate the nuanced, evolved style of aged Northern Rhône reds.
