Description
Dow’s, 1970
Vintage Port
The 1970 vintage in the Douro is widely regarded as one of the great declared years of the 20th century, producing Vintage Ports of structure, depth and remarkable longevity. Dow’s, long celebrated for its firm, dry style and powerful expression of fruit, produced a 1970 that has become a benchmark for the house.
Dow’s vineyards at Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira are known for delivering concentrated, structured fruit, and the 1970 reflects the house’s hallmark character — restrained sweetness, impressive backbone and enduring ageing potential.
Tasting Notes:
Now deep garnet with brick tones at the rim, the nose is richly evolved and complex. Aromas of black cherry, dried plum and fig are layered with notes of dark chocolate, cedar and tobacco leaf. With time in the glass, hints of spice, leather and a subtle eucalyptus lift emerge. On the palate it is full-bodied and structured, the tannins softened yet still present, supporting flavours of dark berries, cocoa and warming spice. The finish is long, firm and elegant, showing the classic dry edge that defines Dow’s.
Serving & Food Pairing:
Decant carefully to remove natural sediment and allow the wine time to breathe before serving. Best enjoyed at cellar temperature. An excellent partner to blue cheeses such as Stilton, dark chocolate desserts or simply savoured on its own after dinner.
Summary:
A benchmark release from a legendary declared vintage, Dow’s 1970 Vintage Port offers depth, structure and the distinctive dry elegance that has made the house one of the Douro’s most respected names.
