Description
Vintage & Background
The 2018 vintage in Spain offered ripe yet balanced conditions across many regions, and Costers del Segre’s Purgatori reflects this blend of fruit concentration and focussed structure. A red blend typically incorporating Garnacha, Syrah and Cariñena, Purgatori is designed as a rich, characterful wine that benefits from time in bottle — especially in the generous 1.5 L magnum format which often enhances harmony and intensity.
Appearance & Nose
In the glass the wine shows a deep garnet colour, dense and saturated. On the nose, expressive aromas of blackberry, blueberry and dark plum are complemented by fine smoky spice and subtle hints of orange rind. These combine with delicate savoury and wild herb accents, suggesting both varietal ripeness and regional complexity.
Palate & Texture
The palate is rich and suave yet energetic, offering concentrated dark fruit flavours framed by elegantly integrated tannins and balanced acidity. Notes of black fruit compote, spice, and subtle meaty/herbal nuance carry through, while the texture remains smooth and persistent. The finish is long and poised, with the interplay of fruit richness and structure giving it approachable yet refined elongation.
Maturity & Drinking Window
At around five years of age, the 2018 Purgatori in magnum is entering an attractive drinking window, showing both freshness and complexity without sacrificing intensity. It should continue evolving gracefully over the next few years, developing deeper tertiary nuance with patience.
