La Rioja Alta Viña Ardanza Reserva 1985 – Rioja

The 1985 Viña Ardanza Reserva from La Rioja Alta is a beautifully mature and classic expression of traditional Rioja, now showing the full charm and elegance that long ageing can deliver. The colour has softened to a clear garnet with brick-orange tones at the rim, reflecting its graceful development.

The nose is complex, refined and wonderfully expressive. Aromas of dried cherry, redcurrant and plum are layered with notes of leather, tobacco, vanilla, coconut and gentle sweet spice from long American oak ageing. Hints of dried herbs, forest floor and orange peel add further depth and character.

On the palate, the wine is smooth, balanced and harmonious. The tannins are fully resolved, giving a silky texture, while flavours of dried red fruits, tea leaf, savoury spice and gentle oak sweetness unfold with clarity. Fresh acidity keeps the wine lively and beautifully composed.

The finish is long, elegant and persistent, leaving lingering impressions of dried fruit, vanilla, leather and soft spice. This is a Rioja that perfectly reflects the house style of La Rioja Alta.

This mature Viña Ardanza pairs superbly with roast lamb, pork, grilled chicken, chorizo, jamón ibérico and classic Spanish dishes, as well as mushroom-based tapas and aged Manchego.
