Description
The Quinta da Devesa 40-Year-Old White Port is a rare and distinguished expression from the Douro Valley, showcasing the estate's dedication to traditional winemaking and sustainable viticulture. Crafted from a blend of indigenous white grape varieties, including Côdega de Larinho, Rabigato, and Malvasia Fina, this port is aged in oak casks for an average of 40 years, resulting in a complex and refined profile.
In the glass, it exhibits a golden white colour with slightly greenish hues. The nose is rich and layered, offering aromas of orange, vanilla, wood, nut, and honey. On the palate, it is full and fresh, with notes of dried fruit, caramel, and spices, culminating in a long, sweet, and vanilla finish.
This white port has garnered critical acclaim, receiving 92 points from Robert Parker and 94 points from For the Love of Port. It is best served slightly chilled, between 10°C and 12°C, and pairs wonderfully with soft goat cheese, melon soup, or as an aperitif. Once opened, it maintains its quality for up to four months when stored properly.
The Quinta da Devesa 40-Year-Old White Port stands as a testament to the potential of aged white ports, offering a harmonious balance of freshness and complexity that appeals to both seasoned enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

Tasting Notes:
The NV 40 Year White Port is a field blend bottled in 2019 with a bar-top cork, 20% alcohol and 112 grams of sugar. It is mainly a blend this year of the 1967 and 1970 (although different casks than those used for the 1970 White Colheita this issue). This seems fresher and livelier than the last release I saw (the 2018, which was not quite the same blend of vintages—another good reason to pay attention to bottling dates with age-indicated Ports). Not nearly as complex as its predecessor—which was more mature and seemed almost like a Tawny—this is nonetheless delectable. I don't think it is so much a question of being better than the last release, but the styles are certainly different, reflecting the producer's view here that "a white should be a white," and the last release was more like a red. This is very fine and rather fresh, and it certainly has its fair share of complexity.
