Description
Palacio Castillo Rioja 1981
The 1981 Palacio Castillo Rioja is a beautifully mature and traditionally styled Rioja, now showing the elegance and gentle complexity that long ageing can bring. The colour has softened to a clear garnet with brick-orange tones at the rim, reflecting its graceful evolution.
The nose is refined and expressive, offering aromas of dried cherry, redcurrant and plum, layered with leather, tobacco, vanilla, coconut and gentle sweet spice from extended American oak ageing. Subtle notes of forest floor, dried herbs and orange peel add further depth and classic Rioja character.
On the palate, the wine is light to medium-bodied, smooth and harmonious. The tannins are fully resolved, giving a silky, refined texture, while flavours of dried red fruits, tea leaf, savoury spice and soft oak sweetness unfold with clarity. Fresh acidity keeps the wine balanced and lively despite its age.
The finish is elegant, calm and quietly persistent, leaving lingering impressions of dried fruit, leather, vanilla and gentle spice. This is a Rioja for contemplation rather than power.
This mature Rioja pairs beautifully with roast lamb, pork, grilled chicken, mushroom dishes, classic Spanish stews and aged Manchego or other semi-hard cheeses.
A graceful, fully mature Rioja offering subtle complexity, balance and timeless charm. The 1981 Palacio Castillo Rioja is a fine example of traditional Rioja ageing with dignity and quiet beauty.
