About Sandeman
Sandeman’s history is a testament to its enduring legacy in the wine world, combining tradition with innovation to maintain its prestigious position in the market. Sandeman was founded in 1790 by George Sandeman, a young Scotsman who began trading in port and sherry wines in London. He borrowed £300 from his father to start his business. By 1795, Sandeman had established himself as a successful wine merchant, and his business began to expand rapidly.
In 1805 he bought a wine cellar in Cadiz, Spain, to secure a steady supply of sherry and in 1811: He purchased a cellar in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal.
Sandeman is notable for its innovation and Marketing. In1928, the creation of "The Don" logo, designed by George Massiot Brown, marked a significant step in the brand's identity. The silhouette of a cape-clad figure, dressed in a Portuguese student’s cape and a Spanish hat, holding a glass of wine, became an iconic symbol of Sandeman. In 2002 Sandeman was acquired by Sogrape Vinhos, a leading Portuguese wine company.
