The 1964 wine vintage was a five star vintage for north Italy producing some very fine wines that are still drinking today. The vintage was very good for Port, although not declared) and also for Bordeaux. Any of these wines would make a fabulous 62 year old wine gift for an Anniversary or birthday.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Spanna, 1964 Giuseppe Barni - Riserva Red Wine
  • 1964 Palo Cortado, Montilla Moriles, Spain
  • Justino's Madeira, 1964

Bordeaux: In Bordeaux, the red wines from the 1964 vintage were generally characterized by a lighter and more elegant style. They may not have the power, richness, or aging potential of some of the top vintages, but they can still offer pleasant drinking experiences. The harvest and weather favoured those producers on the right bank who harvested early (Graves, St Emilion and Pomerol).

Italian: An outstanding 5-star vintage in Piedmont and Tuscany that produced wines of immense grandeur. The depth of the bouquet and the fullness of flavour came together with rounded tannins to produce immense wines of character and dimension. Growers could leave the grapes on the vine to become ripe, and harvest went on until mid-November to give a large crop.

Portugal: The 1964 port vintage was a challenging year due to fluctuating weather conditions; a small amount of single quinta port was made but it is very rare. However, some truly excellent single harvest Colheitas were produced. The weather at the start of the year was unsettled, with rain and thunderstorms at the end of July followed by a hot, dry August which developed the vines. The hot weather continued throughout the season and into the harvest, when it began to fluctuate. The grapes harvested were more raisin than the winemakers would like and this is reflected in the small amounts of port produced.

Spain: 1964 has been known as the 'vintage of the century' for Rioja. Tastings of various wines from different estates and classifications reveal the same incredible sweet fruit, vibrancy and youthfulness. An excellent vintage for Spain.

    Chateau Calon Segur, 1964

    3ème Cru Classé Saint Estèphe

The 1964 Calon Segur has a mature mahogany hue with tawny rim, the nose is fully mature with aromas of Chinese 5-spice, molasses, mint and cedar, lacking the clarity of a great ’61. The palate is medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and fine, sturdy tannins, still earthy but dominated by decayed, mushroom fruit and sous-bois on the finish. Still utterly enjoyable, but beginning to show its age. Drink now.

Château Calon-Ségur, located in the esteemed Saint-Estèphe appellation of Bordeaux, France, is a historic estate renowned for its exceptional wines and storied heritage. With roots dating back to the 12th century, this illustrious property has been meticulously maintained, blending tradition with modern innovation.

    Bekaar Valley, Lebanon, Gaston Hochar
Excellent Provenance from the Avery Family Cellars

A rare bottle of 1964 Chateau Musar. From an extraordinary vintage year, this remarkable wine is still going as strong as ever. As deep, rich and concentrated today as it was in its youth and still showing tantalising ripeness. Scarlet in colour with terracotta tones at the rim, it has a complex nose of cigar box spice, warm leather, baked fruits, ripe morello cherries and blackcurrants. Medium to full-bodied, really silky with a great mouth feel, lively and really rich on the palate, extremely drinkable with sweet, ripe tannins. The palate has intense flavours of dark chocolate, red cherries, olives, figs, and velvet smooth tannins on the very long finish, lingering sweet red fruits and spices in the aftertaste.

    Inferno, 1964

    Enologica Valtelinese

Inferno is one of five viticultural sub-zones specifically identified as producing Valtellina wines of particularly high quality: the other four are Grumello, Sassella, Maroggia and Valgella. Inferno means 'hell' in Italian, and refers to the slopes between Sondrio town and the village of Tresivio. Although DOC laws do not explain the origins of this name, it has been suggested that in summer the slopes here get noticeably hotter than the rest of the valley. Just across Sondrio to the west is Sassella, the finest of the Valtellina sub-zones.
