The 1965 vintage for both Bordeaux and Burgundy was fairly abysmal, blighted by bad weather. Whereas Italy, produced some very good age-worthy wines. Port went undeclared but some nice colheitas were made and could still be drinking well now. Any of these wines would make a fabulous 60 year old wine gift for an Anniversary or birthday.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Kopke 1965 Single Harvest Colheita Port
  • Dow's Quinta do Bonfim 1965 Vintage Port
  • Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac 1965 Reserve Joseph Millesime
  • Bodegas Toro Albala 1965 Don Px Selección Montilla Moriles
  • Chateau Latour 1965 Premiere Grand cru Classe
  • Barolo 1965 Scarpa Riserva Speciale

Bordeaux: 1965 Bordeaux Wines are generally considered to have produced a poor vintage due to wet weather. It is unlikely that anything other than the first growths will have stood the test of time.

Italian: Whilst Bordeaux suffered from poor weather, Piedmont and Tuscany produced an abundant crop of long-lived wines that still make good drinking today.

Portugal: Port wines from 1965 make a great wine gift, whether for a birthday or anniversary. Ports of this year were shaped by a hot dry summer, with a little welcome sporadic rain. In general they are rich and powerful port wines with burnt coffee bean tawny characteristics typical of a hot vintage. The vintage was not declared by the major port houses who were looking ahead to the glorious 66 vintage, and there are very few single quintas port around, however there are some outstanding colheita ports available such as the highly recommended 1965 Taylors Single Harvest Port - (link above).

    Fonseca Port, 1965

    Guimaraens Single Quinta Port

The 1965 Fonseca is a rare and highly prized single-vintage release from one of the Douro’s most distinguished houses. Although not a universally declared vintage, Fonseca chose to bottle this wine due to the exceptional quality of fruit harvested that year—producing a Vintage Port that has stood the test of time with remarkable grace. Now well over half a century old, it remains a beautiful expression of mature Port, offering depth, nuance, and Fonseca’s signature opulence in a gentler, more contemplative form.

On the nose, the wine is wonderfully evolved, with lifted aromas of dried fig, rose petal, caramelised orange peel, and soft baking spice.

    Graham's Port, 1965

    Malvedos Vintage Port
    Damaged label

Wonderful on the nose, full of rich spices and sweet cranberries - really very attractive. Gentle golden sultana fruit on the palate, very mature flavour profile but with plenty of dried fruits and delicious complex spices. Fragrant aftertaste with just touch of spirit before a nutty and delicious long finish that turns into icing sugar flavours. Drinking very nicely at the moment. Tasting note: Tawny brown of medium intensity and a narrow amber rim. The nose of this wine is sumptuous in its richness and complexity. Messias, 1965

    Colheita Port, Douro

Colheita Ports are known for their elegance and finesse. The 1965 Messias Colheita Port showcases the characteristics of a single year and reflects the careful aging process in oak barrels. Only bottled recently, this wine should have maintained a lively freshness.

    Tasting notes
In the glass it exhibits a brilliant tawny colour. Fresh with, with a orange blossom bouquet that brings out further aromas of dried fruits, roasted almonds and walnuts, wood and spices due to the prolonged time this wine has spent in cask. This gradual oxidation has created a soft and harmonious port full of complex flavour characteristics.

    Chateau d'Yquem, 1965

    Sauternes 1er Grand cru Classe

Yquem is indisputedly the best wine in Sauternes and may well be the finest sweet wine in the world.

A good wine. On the nose, bthere is some orange marmalade, honey and spice character in this wine. Turns quite woody, with lots of caramel.

YQUEM NOTES: It was very cold from April to September which dashed hopes for good ripeness. The deluge in late September (100 mm in 8 days) was very worrying, but things changed all of a sudden. The rain stopped and it was finally warm. There were two fine passes from the 3rd to the 12th of October and a third from the 16th to the 20th, however it was difficult to find grapes with high enough sugar levels.
