The 1968 vintage for Bordeaux was the product of an extremely wet August and generally bad growing season making the overall quality low. Burgundy also suffered with very little to recommend it. For Italy, 1968 marked another good year and saw the first public release of Sassicaia. Port was also good but few houses declared. Any of these wines would make a fabulous 58 year old wine gift for an Anniversary or birthday.
Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:
This Year in History: Fun Fact: – Gardeners' World debuts on BBC1 television, featuring Percy Thrower.
Eurovision Winner: Spain with the song "La La La" by Massiel.
Top Grossing Movie: 2001: A Space Odyssey
Bordeaux: Poor weather throughout the growing and harvest seasons led to a small, low quality, vintage. Most of the 1968 wine produced was consumed within a few years of the vintage and very few examples exist today. Those that still exist are well into decline and are unlikely to be of good drinking.
Italian: 1968 was a good year for Italian heavyweight wines such as Barolo and Brunello. Whilst Bordeaux suffered from a poor vintage, 1968 marked somewhat of a renaissance for Italian wines particularly those from Tuscany and Piedmont. 1968 was the vintage that Sassicaia was first offered on the open market.
Portugal: Making an excellent wine gift for a birthday or anniversary, 1968 Port wines follow a strong run of vintages in the 1960's. The summer was hot and dry with no rain whatsoever in June and July, and only a little in August and September. The harvest should have produced solid good wines. However, only a few vintage ports (Sandeman) and Single Quinta ports were declared. There are still a few Colheita ports available which are drinking very well but stocks are tiny. These bottles are now very rare!

Inferno, 1968
F.B. Acqui Clearance Offer | Was £89 | Now £50
Inferno is one of five viticultural sub-zones specifically identified as producing Valtellina wines of particularly high quality: the other four are Grumello, Sassella, Maroggia and Valgella. Inferno means 'hell' in Italian, and refers to the slopes between Sondrio town and the village of Tresivio. Although DOC laws do not explain the origins of this name, it has been suggested that in summer the slopes here get noticeably hotter than the rest of the valley. Just across Sondrio to the west is Sassella, the finest of the Valtellina sub-zones.

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, 1968
Casal Thaulero
Montepulciano is a red wine grape variety grown widely in central Italy, most notably its eastern Abruzzo, Marche and Molise regions. The variety was named after the Tuscan parish of Montepulciano, but, confusingly, is not used in the famous wines produced there (see Vino Nobile di Montepulciano). Globally appreciated for their soft flavors, strong color and gentle tannins, Montepulciano wines are typically best consumed in their youth and with food. The deep-purple juice of Montepulciano grapes is used in varying proportions to produce wines under roughly 50 of Italy's DOC and DOCG titles. Although sometimes used on its own, …

Sandeman, 1968
Vintage Port Pen marking on label
Tasted by our wine buyer at the Sandeman 20 Vintage Tasting November 2013. "Tawny rim; good nose, some cigar, spice and chocolate, dried fruit. On the palate, ripe and sweet not quite in tune but still quite opulent with integrated tannins. Excellent finish - my first tasting of a '68 and quite a surprise for a generally undeclared year. 3 Puttonyos - Aszu - Palackizo Uzem - HALF BOTTLE 0,5 Liter
Hungary’s most famous dessert wine is Tokaji the legendary sweet elixir. It can only be spoken in the superlative about this wine, as it is a medicine, a real nectar. The name Tokaji (which is of Protected Designation of Origin) is used for labelling wines from this wine district. The location of the region has a unique climate, beneficial to this particular viniculture, due to the protection of the nearby mountains, long warm autumns and mists that come in from the River Bodrog, creating perfect conditions for noble rot.
