The end of the decade was not the best for Bordeaux, with heavy rains diluting the wines. However, a poor year for reds meant a great year for Sauternes and Barsac. Burgundy and the Rhône Valley were both excellent and both Italy and Port enjoyed good solid vintages, and some are likely to still be drinking well now. Any of these wines would make a fabulous 56 year old wine gift for an Anniversary or birthday.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Quinta da Devesa 1969 White Colheita Port
  • Barbaresco 1969 Giovanni Scanavino
  • Barolo 1969 C Valletti
  • Bordeaux 1969 Chateau Foureau
  • Chateau dYquem 1969 Sauternes 1er Grand Cru Classe
  • Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1969 – Half Bottle

  •
This Year in History: Fun Fact: The world’s largest aeroplane, The Boeing 747, makes its first-ever commercial flight.
Eurovision Winners: France, Netherlands, Spain and UNITED KINGDOM with the song "Boom Bang-a-Bang" by Lulu
Top Grossing Movie: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Bordeaux: The 1969 wine vintage was unkind to Bordeaux reds. Rain during the September harvest contributed to what was a small crop of light-weight wines that lacked longevity. Only first growth wines will be drinkable. However, sweet wines from the regions of Sauternes and Barsac were very good in this year and will last for many more years.

Italian: 1969 was a good vintage for Italian wines. The weather was good throughout the year enabling the grapes to reach a high degree of ripeness. Of particular note are the heavyweight, long-lived wines such as Barolo, Brunello and lighter wines such as Chianti and Valpolicella. The wines are now fully mature and still drinking well.

Portugal: A vintage Port from the 1969 vintage makes a perfect 54 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary. Some excellent Colheita (Tawny) Ports were produced from the 1969 harvest and these are highly recommended by our wine buyer. The 1969 vintage was good enough to yield a few single Quinta vintage ports, notably Taylors Vargellas and some exceptional Colheita ports.

    Barbera, 1969

    Dessilani Luigi

    Barolo, 1969

    Giovanni Scanavino

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Luigi Calissano - Riserva Speciale, Barolo, Piedmont
    Special Offer Was £169

    Offer Ends 30th August

Appearance: pale garnet or amber colour, with a broad, tawny rim.
Nose: intensely aromatic and layered. Expect a bouquet of dried roses, potpourri, and old leather, typical of aged Barolo. Earthy and savoury notes like truffle, underbrush, and wet leaves would likely be prominent, along with hints of tobacco, cigar box, and perhaps a touch of menthol or eucalyptus.
Palate: smooth and harmonious, with tannins that have softened to a velvety texture. The acidity, while still present, would provide a balance that keeps the wine lively despite its age. Flavours of dried cherries, cranberries, and figs would dominate, intertwined with savoury elements like dried herbs, leather, and truffle.

The 1969 Beychevelle is fully mature and scores and average of over 92 Points on Cellartracker. A typical review is "Garnet colour. But surprisingly dark and red for its age. A leafy nose. Cigars and green vegetables. High acidity. Medium bodied. A lean palate. Fruit has subsided. Quite secondary and tertiary now. Definitely time to drink up but has aged gracefully." Chateau Cheval Blanc, 1969

St Emilion Premiere Grand Cru Classe

Nose retained some black fruit, healthy and concentrated. In the mouth it was exquisite, a fine mature Bordeaux with sweetness, length, concentration and good length. Thoroughly enjoyable and not tired in the least!" Cellar tracker.com Deep mature colour. Amazingly good nose. Stables, leather, smoke, salt/mineral, cassis, tobacco and pencil/graphite. Stringent, lots of tannins, but still fruit that stand up to the tannins. On the palate this wine offers leather, coffee, tobacco, meat and blood. Quite light body, but very nice mouthfill and the finish is quite long - 25 to 30 sec. " cellartracker.

    Chateau Climens, 1969

    1er Cru Classe Barsac

The 1969 Château Climens is a compelling example of Barsac's Premier Cru Classé, offering insight into the estate's resilience during a less heralded vintage. Despite the challenges of the 1969 harvest, this wine showcases Climens' dedication to quality and its unique terroir.

In the glass, the 1969 Climens presents a deep amber hue, indicative of its age and the oxidative development characteristic of mature Sauternes. The nose reveals aromas of Satsuma, apricot, and a touch of brown sugar, suggesting a wine that has retained its vibrancy over time. On the palate, it offers citrus freshness with notes of dried peaches and apricot, culminating in a tangy finish.

    Chateau Croizet Bages, 1969

    Pauillac 5th Growth Classification

The 1969 Chateau Croizet Bages is a classic Bordeaux from a weak vintage. These bottles are from a good cellar, where they have been well-stored since original purchase.

Tasting notes: The wine is primarily made from Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller proportions of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Expect to find notes of soy, dense, dark and brooding ashy notes and umami. Cedar and ash, wood smoke and undergrowth. It will still show remnants of its blackcurrant and bramble nature. This wine is slumbering but alive.

Food Pairing This wine would pair beautifully with rich, hearty dishes such as roasted lamb, beef stew, or aged cheeses.

    Sweet White Wine

Yquem is indisputedly the best wine in Sauternes and may well be the finest sweet wine in the world.

    *** 94 Points Cellar Tracker ***

    Reviews
"There is always a high level of star gazing when a bottle of old Yquem shows up. Even an ok bottle like this makes you feel a million bucks. Dark caramel in colour. Apricots on the nose, sweet glycerin. On the palate it is well evolved full of ripe fruit, botrytis and although it is low in vitality it still makes for a superb experience. We can not be unbiased to the star gazing here but this is a good 94" CellarTracker.com
