1990 Wine and Port Vintage

Vintage Port:

1990-wine-gifts

The 1990 Port vintage produced abundant quantities of good quality port wine. Generally produced as Single Qunitas and outstanding Colheita Port. Paul Symington writes "The Douro 1990 Vintage can be summed up in just four words – production, enormous – quality, excellent. The 1990 Vintage has probably favoured not so much the very early starting quintas, but those whose grapes were picked from the third week of September onwards; however, overall quality promises to be good to excellent." 29 October 1990.

Italian: 1990 was a spectacular vintage for Italy, one of the best in modern times. Most producers made very good wines at all levels. The wines are drinking well but will continue to develop with good cellaring.

Bordeaux: 1990 Wine Vintage was the third year in a row of excellent Bordeaux vintages. The hot, dry sunny year ensured that, like many of the great vintages, 1990 produced rich wines from across the Bordeaux region. Many of the red wines from this vintage have a roasted or baked quality derived from the hot sun ripening the grapes. The vintage is characterised by having a tannic quality coupled with low acidity. Most of the quality wines from this vintage are still at the peak of their maturity, making them great 31 year old wine gifts for a birthday or anniversary.

Champagne: A superb year and one of the top half-dozen vintages of the last century. The champagnes display good body and marvellous depth of fruit as well as great finesse and very good longevity. The best will be drinking well for many years to come.

Ryst-Dupeyon Armagnac, 1990

Ryst Dupeyron Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
50cl bottle

The 1990 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

The Maison Ryst-Dupeyon was founded by Joseph Dupeyron in 1905.

Baron de Sigognac, 1990

Armagnac
Includes Original Sigognac Wooden Box

The company behind this Armagnac owns one of the most important stocks of old vintages in the whole region. They are growers as well as distillers and specialise in sourcing and ageing old casks of Armagnac.

This Armagnac is made from a blend of Baco and Ugni Blanc, the predominant grapes used in the production of Armagnac. The distillation takes place in a column still to an alcohol strength of about 54%. The spirit is then aged in local black oak casks. The alcohol content then reduces naturally to about 40% after about forty years. Presented in a perfectly simple wooden box.

Cabernet, 1990

Quinta do Poço do Lobo

Caves S. Joao, established in 1920, became a dominant force in Portuguese wine making in the early stocktake 20/02/2120th century with their houses Porta dos Cavaleiros in Dao and Frei Joao in Bairrada. Given the shifting trends in consumer preferences, Bairrada and Dao fell to obscurity in the 1990s when critical influence drove the demand for bigger, extracted, warmer climate wines. As in all things, however, what comes around goes around! Sure enough, 20 years later savvy consumers and food-conscious sommeliers are looking for finesse and freshness and heading back to Bairrada and Dao. Wines that when young had a vegetal character,

Chateau Guiraud, 1990

Sauternes
91 Points - Parker
91 Points - Wine Spectator

This is a classic Sauternes with a great deal of sweetness, plenty of ripeness, and obvious aromas of toasty, smoky new oak. The wine exhibits finesse and complexity, a style of Sauternes that will have its admirers, particularly among those who like to drink these wines as an aperitif.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
A showy display of power, highly extracted, smoky, buttery, pineapple and orange-scented fruit, lavish quantities of toasty new oak, and unctuously thick, massive flavors and texture. This huge wine avoids being overbearing because of its adequate acidity. (4-1995).
91 / 100

Wine Spectator
Very ripe and deliciously sticky.

Chateau Haut Brion, 1990

Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe

The only non-Médoc estate to be included in the famous 1855 classification, Château Haut-Brion’s viticultural history can be traced back further than its Médoc first growth counterparts. Located in the bustling commercial suburb of Pessac, Haut-Brion was purchased by the American family Dillon in 1935 when it was in a considerably poor condition, the family invested greatly in the estate and today this property is one of the showpiece estates of Graves. At Haut-Brion wines are fermented in stainless steel vats, after which the wine will spend 22 months, sometimes more, in new oak barrels before being bottled unfiltered.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1990

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe,

Reviews.
96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Interestingly, a bottle of 1990 Lafite Rothschild I pulled from my cellar for a video blog on my web site was still buttoned down, tight, and even with extended decanting was not showing as much as I would have hoped. However, a bottle tasted, of all places, in Seoul, Korea in February, was only a few points short of perfection. That amazing performance motivated me to pull another bottle out of my cellar and follow it over the course of two days. Sure enough, by the second day the wine was roaring from the glass. The 1990 Lafite has turned out far better than my early assessment.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1990

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

Scintillating nose; absolutely gorgeous aromas of vanilla-smothered berries, violet, and a fine, earthy, truffly quality with hints of cedar, coffee and spice. Deep and deliciously inviting. The palate lets this stunning first impression down slightly, with slightly under-powered cherry and blackcurrant fruit. There's a background of sweet oak, and good freshness with balanced acidity and fine tannins.

Taittinger, 1990

Vintage Champagne Corneille

For the Taittinger Collection, Corneille expresses his art using the two core values which were constant in his work from 1946 onwards: line and colour.

Figures are formed using gestures made in colour on a solid, or modulated, coloured background. Strangely-shaped birds, reminiscent of those found on bas-reliefs in Coptic monasteries or on the totem poles of Indian tribes, are depicted on a background which is painted in a green, similar to the vine leaves themselves. The birds are ready to take flight and break free from cages and barriers as universal messengers of joy - much like the wine contained within the bottle.

Dom Perignon, 1990

Champagne in own gift box

** 98 Points - In Asia **

Reviews "Medium lemon-straw colour. Intensely fragrant nose with aromas of jasmine, cinnamon buttered toast, stewed apples and preserved ginger. Concentrated honey-nut, warm apple tart and spice flavours fill the mouth giving ample flesh to the firm, fine structure. The bubbles are still remarkably frisky and, in harmony with the crisp backbone of acid, make for a relatively youthful, elegant and exquisitely balanced wine. Very long finish." Dom Perignon, 1990

Dom Perignon Rose Champagne

1990 Dom Pérignon Rosé- Hedonist's Gazette, June 2010: The 1990 Dom Pérignon Rosé, tasted from before dinner, was breathtakingly beautiful, with superb definition, depth and purity to its rich, textured mousse. It provided yet another reminder of just how much Champagne excels in large formats. This was a fabulous bottle I came back to often throughout the evening. It never failed to make a lasting impression.

Veuve Clicquot, 1990

Ponsardin Champagne

The 1990 Veuve Clicquot is... "a medium gold colour, no hints of orange - very fine bubbles that persisted for 1-2 hrs - beautiful old brioche nose with light to moderate oxidation, dried apples and pears, asian spices (Saigon cinnamon), and flinty minerality - full-bodied mouth with loads of very ripe apple/pear fruit, more oxidative flavors than in the nose - great acidity that provided a refreshing youthfulness to a mature champagne - longer finish than most red wines of the same age with a beautiful sweet aftertaste sans any hint of bitterness - I agree with earlier tasting notes that it combined both impressive power with delightful elegance".
