1990 Wine and Port Vintage

Vintage Port: 1990 Port: Not a general declaration. The 1990 Vintage produced abundant quantities of good quality port wine, a small amount of which was outstanding.

Italian: 1990 Italian Wines : A spectacular vintage, one of the best in modern times. Most producers made very good wines at all levels. The wines are drinking well but will continue to develop with good cellaring.

Bordeaux: 1990 Wines:1990 was the third year in a row of excellent Bordeaux vintages. The hot, dry sunny year ensured that, like many of the great vintages, 1990 produced rich wines from across the Bordeaux region. Many of the red wines from this vintage have a roasted or baked quality derived from the hot sun ripening the grapes. The vintage is characterised by having a tannic quality coupled with low acidity. Most of the quality wines from this vintage are still at the peak of their maturity and will continue to remain so for a few more years.

Champagne: 1990 Champagne: A superb year and one of the top half-dozen vintages of the last century. The champagnes display good body and marvellous depth of fruit as well as great finesse and very good longevity. The best will be drinking well for many years to come.

Baron de Sigognac, 1990

Armagnac ( Comes in Original Sigognac Wooden Box as illustrated)

The company behind this Armagnac owns one of the most important stocks of old vintages in the whole region. They are growers as well as distillers and specialise in sourcing and ageing old casks of Armagnac.

The Armagnac is made from a blend of Baco and Ugni Blanc, the predominant grapes used in the production of Armagnac. The distillation takes place in a column still to an alcohol strength of about 54%. The spirit is then aged in local black oak casks. The alcohol content then reduces naturally to about 40% after about forty years. Presented in a perfectly simple wooden box

Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1990

St Estephe, 2me Cru Classe

In contrast to the 1989, the 1990 is a spectacular wine, and, along with the 1986, 1982, and 1953, one of the four finest Cos d'Estournels made in the post-World War II era. Bruno Prats believes it is the finest wine he has ever made. In the most recent tasting, the 1990 was even better than in the past, charming me as well as other tasters with its flashy display of opulent Merlot (about 40% of the blend) mixed with ripe Cabernet Sauvignon. It was one of the more forward 1990s in the tasting, which no doubt accounted for its precocious showing. This super-concentrated wine possesses a roasted herb, sweet, jammy black fruit-scented nose, with noteworthy opulence and succulence.

Chateau Coufran, 1990

Haut-Médoc Cru Bourgeois

The fruit has started to go towards the drier side and the sweetness is taken up by forest floor notes. There is a nice balance between the remaining tannin, acidity and alcohol. Works very well with food.

Chateau d'Issan, 1990

Margaux

Decanted and served immediately. Colour is bright, brick red with a very slight brown edge. Nose is very intense and perfumed, with blackberry, liquorice, jam and cherry. Almost explosive bouquet: this is what Margaux perfume is all about. Palate continues the jammy, cherry flavours but some earthiness and a slight trace of mint freshness. Plenty of very well integrated tannins and a medium finish. Youthful, still vibrant, balanced and delicious.

Chateau Pontet Canet, 1990

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe

This bottle of 1990 displays a touch of brettanomyces on the nose, but it is not off-putting and actually complements the scents of truffle, moss and cooked meats. Medium-bodied on the palate with good acidity for the vintage, but at 21-years of age beginning to lack a little vigour. This is a pleasurable Pontet-Canet, one that deserves drinking now

Chateau Potensac, 1990

Medoc

The Chateau Potensac 1990 is almost as good as their 1989. Has plenty of cassis, leaf and cedar to begin with. The wine is fresh and gains in the glass. The fruits have a ripe, creamy edge from the vintage but the wine remains savoury and true. It has ample structure beneath the flesh and is still drinking nicely. A beautiful mature older Medoc.

Muffato della Sala, 1990

Castello della Sala - Antinori

The wine shows a luminous and intense golden yellow color. The nose is delicate and elegant with its floral scents, but is dominated by the notes of ripe fruit, apricot and peach, along with hints of citrus fruit accompanied by sensations of minerals and iodine. The palate confirms the timber and character of the nose. A long and balanced wine in which sweetness and freshness fuse in perfect harmony.

Muffato della Sala is produced from grapes attacked by “noble rot”, harvested in early November when morning mists have favored the development of botrytis cinerea on the grapes. This mould reduces the water content of the berries,

Nebbiolo, 1990

Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine. Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavored wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.
