2023 was widely reported as the hottest year on record.Around the globe, climate change is having an impact on both people and industry, and the world of wine is no different. As a result, the 2023 vintage was for many regions, especially parts of Europe, a little fraught with some wildly unpredictable weather patterns. The wines of regions like Bordeaux may not adhere quite so strictly to the classic styles of past vintages, however, that’s not to say what has been made is not equally as good – or possibly in some cases better – but only time will tell.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Quevedo 2023, Vintage Port

  • Quinta da Fonte Souto, 2023 White Wine

  •
This Year in History: Fun Fact: A visit by Thor the Walrus to Scarborough harbour, North Yorkshire overnight on New Year's Eve results in the town's New Year fireworks celebrations being cancelled to let the walrus rest for his journey to the Arctic.
Eurovision Winner: Won by Sweden with the song "Tattoo" by Loreen.
    Top Grossing Movie: Barbie!

Bordeaux: The 2023 Bordeaux vintage is seen as a good‑quality but variable year, with impressive wines in the best vineyards but less consistency overall than some recent standout vintages. Top producers made balanced reds with fresh fruit, refined tannins and moderate alcohol, and many wines show appealing freshness and approachability young.

Douro Wines: In the Douro for table wines, 2023 was marked by moderate summer conditions with helpful rainfall, giving vines enough water to achieve good ripeness and phenolic development. Producers are reporting balanced red wines with healthy acidity and fresh character, and whites and rosés showing attractive vibrancy and purity of fruit. Overall, 2023 Douro wines are well‑structured and expressive.

Italian: The 2023 Italian vintage saw much lower harvest volumes — the smallest in decades — due to early mildew and wet weather, but quality remains promising in many regions. Despite challenges, cooler sites and careful vineyard work helped produce expressive, well‑balanced wines, and 2023 shows strong results especially in Sangiovese, Piedmont reds, and other classic Italian styles.

Portugal: 2023 was a notable year for Port, with several top producers releasing declared Vintage Ports or high‑quality Quinta Vintage Ports. The growing season had milder conditions and good rainfall, leading to balanced ripeness, purity of fruit, and strong structure with ageing potential. Although not a full classic declaration region‑wide, many excellent Vintage Ports are being released or planned, showing deep fruit, elegance and long‑term promise

    Quevedo, 2023

    Claudia's Reserve
    Douro White Wine
    89 Points - Wine Advocate

The 2023 Claudia's Branco Reserve is a blend of Gouveio (52%), Viosinho (25%), Códega (18%) and Folgasão for the rest, all aged for eight months in one-third new French and Hungarian oak. It comes in at 12.9% alcohol. This handles its oak flawlessly, which means that the fruit shines through and the freshness takes control. There's a juicy and tasty finish with just a little acidic bite. I'm not sure this will evolve much if you age it, but it might hold on and become more interesting over the next couple of years. There's not a lot of concentration, but the rest is very fine. Drink this on its own or with lighter foods.

    Quinta Das Carvalhas, 2023

    Branco das Carvalhas
    Douro White Wine
    Was £28.95
Clearance Offer | Last Few £18.95

This stunning 2023 dry white wine from Quinta Das Carvalhas, is a blend of the indigenous varieties Viosinho, Gouveio, Rabigato, and Códega do Larinho, among others. When looking at producing a top Douro white, the focus was set upon the idea of blending the finest, traditional white Douro varieties and allowing them to integrate in perfect harmony with oak to reinforce its structure and generate more complexity. Carvalhas Branco was born through the winemakers' ambitious approach to the small parcels of white grapes located at one of Quinta das Carvalhas’ highest spots, where the varieties Viosinho and Gouveio benefit from a higher altitude (400m) and cool breezes which are perfect for a good quality ripening of white grapes.

    Graham's Port, 2023

    Quinta Dos Malvedos Vintage Port
    MAgnum 1.5L

    Tasting notes
First impressions on the nose are the trademark Malvedos mint and eucalyptus with hints of orange blossom and a touch of rock rose. Typical Graham opulence and generosity on the palate with layered flavours of blackberry and blueberry, black chocolate and cocoa. Bright acidity and peppery tannins provide freshness and a balanced structure.

    The Year
Abundant rainfall during the first half of the winter reversed the severe drought of 2022, replenishing soil water levels satisfactorily. Although February to April was an exceptionally dry and mild period, generous late spring rainfall in May and June sustained the vines over the ripening cycle.
