Crusted Port is a very small category, named because of the 'crust' of sediment that it forms in the bottle. Invented by the British-owned Port houses predominantly for the British Port drinker, it is intended to be a more economical alternative to Vintage or Late Bottled Vintage. Crusted is a blend of several harvests, which are bottled without being filtered and laid down to mature like Vintage wines. Guimaraens Single Quinta Vintage Port

Fonseca has belonged in the first rank of Vintage Port producers since the nineteenth century. Its Vintage Ports are noted for their luscious fruitiness which develops great opulence and complexity with age.

This is a very rare example from the 1972 vintage. This wine has a tawny coloured rim around the outside. The nose is very gummy and thick with orange peel, slightly medicinal. Very reducted on the palate with thick tar, raisins, orange peel.

The Messias colheita port from the excellent 1970 vintage has been aged in a barrel.

The extended barrel aging has given this wine a complex fusion of dried fruit and cedar notes. On the palate the wine is smooth and full bodies with plenty nuts and sweet fruit on the palate, fine balance. A tremendous finish which goes on forever. From the excellent 1970 vintage, the Calem has a dense, even, opaque crimson colour, with a very rich, dark well of black fruit and floral aromas, with all sorts of mineral and delicately spicy nuances. On the palate this has a beautifully focused sweetness, with a supple, svelte quality of black fruits, that is pure and very long and silky through the mid palate. There are fine chocolaty tannins adding plush depth, and the spirit is nicely integrated. This wine has lovely balance too, with excellent length, emphasising the harmony and structure of the wine.

Tasting Notes: A slightly deeper core compared to the ’63. The nose is very ripe with mulberry and tobacco with a hint of balsam, just lacking a little freshness and delineation. The palate is similar to the ’63, very well-balanced and cohesive, a slightly viscous texture, fresh and surfeit with joie-de-vivre and vivacity. Wild strawberry, lemongrass and fig towards the finish, this is certainly the “dark horse” of the decade and in my humble opinion, superior to the ’63. A little gem. Tasted November 2007.
