The 1948 Taylor's has a strong tawny colour. On the nose there was a wonderful coffee, chocolate and tobacco. With an alluring herbal aroma. On the palate this port has a luscious feel on the palate and incredibly complex layers of caramel, chocolate and coffee. This continued with an incredible long persistent finish. VWP tasting March 2017

Vintage Port, DOC Douro
High shoulder

The Croft 1935 has a noticeably deep mahogany hue with light amber rim. This is the oldest Croft with vestige of fruit lingering on the nose with hints of macerated red cherry, figs, balsam and liquorice. Complex and compelling, with very good lift. The palate is simply outstanding with immense depth and complexity, beautiful sense of natural balance and harmony with spice, Manuka honey and dates. Long, seductive and irresistible, it is difficult to image exactly how port can be much better than this imperious Croft ’35. Brilliant.

The Quinta do Bom Retiro is located in the Douro region, sub-region of Cima Corgo, in the parish of Valença do Douro, Pinhão, and it is washed by the waters of the river Torto. It occupies a total surface area of 110 ha, which vary between an altitude of 110 and 400 metres, 62 ha of which are covered by vines, with ages from 10-20 years 30%; 21-30 years 11%; 31-40 years 8%; 41-50 years 25%; >80 years 26%; more than 50% of Bom Retiro vines have more than 40 years old. The varieties produced here are exclusively red, and, in addition to the 40% mixture, 19% is Touriga Nacional, 16% is Tinta Barroca, 11% is Touriga Franca, 8% is Sousão and 6% is Tinta Roriz. …

"This brings back a fond memory of a long lost friend, Paul Napolitano from NY. He once opened this identical Port for me years ago at his home and at the time, it was the finest Colheita I had experienced, as well as the oldest. This one was bottled in 1976 or 1977. A piece is torn off the label and makes it impossible to be certain. Dark coffee color with a greenish edge. Is this Madeira? A nose of bouillon cube, scents of sea breeze and toffee, reminiscent of a Malvasia and the richness and supple spine live up to that mindset. The palate is packed with copious caramel and fig flavors along with prunes and toffee intricately woven into a neat little package. …

Millennium Port 1880 Colheita Port Bottled by Niepoort in 2002

Cristiano van Zeller (ex Quinta do Noval) discovered the 1880 Port in 1999 at a winery in Regua (River Douro) that was closing following the death of the owner. Cristiano was interested in acquiring stone lagares (foot treading tanks) for his new winery but they also asked if he was interested in any old stock. Most was uninteresting but at the rear of the winery were three 20,000 litre casks, two empty but one containing 10,000 litres of 1880 port, 10,000 litres having evaporated during the intervening 119 years. Royal Corregidor 20 Year Old Oloroso

Appearance
Very deep yet transparent blacky brown fading through oak gall ink to amber at the rim, legs.

Nose
There is a distinct aroma of age here with considerable depth and complexity. The nose is dry and serious with lots of old oak and walnuts and even a hint of spice, yet traces of fruit and cinder toffee from the PX. There is even the slightest trace of licorice. Such complexity can only come from very old soleras.

Palate
The first material sign of sweetness starts here with old PX richness but the wine is a good bit less sweet than a Cream. The PX is probably there to balance out any astringency from the very old Oloroso, and there is certainly not much astringency now; …
