Cabernet, 1984

Nerderburg- Paarl

Vintage Background
The 1984 vintage in Paarl delivered ripe, classically styled reds under warm Cape conditions. Nederburg, one of South Africa’s most historic and respected estates, was already recognised for producing some of the country’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon. With four decades in bottle, this wine represents a rare glimpse into South Africa’s winemaking heritage during the 1980s.

Tasting Note
Now fully mature, this Cabernet Sauvignon shows a brick-garnet hue with a gentle tawny rim. The bouquet carries dried blackcurrant, cedar, tobacco leaf and earthy spice, while the palate is supple and savoury, with softened tannins and mellow fruit tones of plum and cassis.

An excellent vintage year gave us the Messias 1983 bottle. Very impressive for the age of this wine. Powerful yet elegant, with a fine balance and fluidity. Although it is accessible now, this top effort will benefit from another five to ten years bottle age.

Chateau Batailley, 1983

Pauillac 5th Growth Classification

Château Batailley, a fifth-growth estate in Bordeaux's Pauillac appellation, has a longstanding reputation for producing robust and age-worthy wines. The 1983 vintage, while overshadowed by the exceptional 1982, has matured gracefully over the decades, offering a unique tasting experience for enthusiasts of classic Bordeaux.

The 1983 growing season presented challenges, including hot and humid weather that led to overripe grapes and the development of rot. However, a sunny autumn provided ideal harvesting conditions, resulting in generous and intensely fruity wines that developed more quickly than their 1982 counterparts.

Churchill's Port, 1983

Quinta do Agua Alta
damaged label

Despite its thoroughly traditional-sounding name Churchill is the newest of the British-owned Port companies, founded in 1981 by J. Graham.

Quinta Agua Alta is named after the spring at the top of the vineyard and it produces wonderfully pure and fresh water that bubbles up through the granite rock below the thin top soil. Olives and figs grow in abundance around the vineyard which produces a quite stunninly powerful port.

Deep purple in colour with a mass of soft and concentrated fruit. There's plenty of tannin to give structure and a pleasing earthiness on the finish. This is the perfect way to round off a good dinner.

Fonseca Port, 1983

Vintage Port

Fonseca is one of our all-time favourites. Fonseca's 1983-vintage Port is made with a harvest that survived the first snowfall in Pinhão in 20 years and heavy rain through the spring. The result is intense aromas of dark chocolate, prune, fig and hints of rich double cream. Consider pairing its chocolate, fig, prune, raisin and walnut flavours with a cheeseboard or with festive fare over the Christmas period.

An outstanding Port rating 92/100 from an outstanding vintage. Robert Parker writes of this port... "Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port.

Tokaji, 1983

Tokaji Royal Aszu Essencia (Half litre, 50cl), Hungary

Situated along the southern slopes of the Zemplén Mountains, Tokaj is characterized by late springs and short growing seasons. The average temperatures are generally cool, with long, sunny summers and dry autumns. Tokaj’s soil is largely clay or loess with a volcanic substratum; vines are approximately 20 years old. The meeting of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers in Tokaj creates a mist similar to that of the fog in Sauternes. The mist encourages “botrytis cinerea,” or “noble rot,” which dries and shrivels the Furmint, Hárslevelü and Muscat grape varieties that comprise Tokaji wines, and concentrates the sugars.

Blandys, 1980

Sercial
HALF BOTTLE 37.5cl

The 1980 Blandys Sercial Madeira is "Based on Sercial grown on the north west corner of the island at Seixal and Porto Moniz where I am told that this grape produces the most gentle fruit: lovely clean, lifted aromas, green fruit, apple peel with a touch of citrus; lovely fresh appley flavours with a hint of toffee and milk-chocolate, perhaps just a touch of salinity, steely acidity running all the way through, fresh and lithe on the finish, dry but not austerely so with 55g/l of residual sugar. Just 800 bottles in total."

Chateau Latour, 1980

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

The 1980 Château Latour from Pauillac, one of Bordeaux’s First Growth estates, comes from a less celebrated vintage. The 1980 growing season was challenging due to a cooler and wetter summer, resulting in less-than-ideal conditions for ripening. However, Château Latour is known for its ability to produce outstanding wines even in difficult years and the 1980 vintage is one of the top wines from the vintage, although lighter and less structured compared to more renowned vintages.

Tasting notes for the 1980 Château Latour: The wine is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot typical of Latour’s blend.

Graham's Port, 1980

Vintage Port

Purple fading to red and finally pink at the rim. Rich blackberries on the nose along with very faint stewed strawberries. The tannins were powerful on Christmas day but mellowed some by the next evening. The blackberries carried through as a prominent flavor, but added a sourish note almost like a sour cherry. The finish starts out with a rich butter cookie note, but then quickly switches to grape stem.

Jacob Gerhardt Neirsteiner Schlosskellerein, 1980

Jacob Gerhardt Neirsteiner Schlosskellerein, Auslese Rheinhessen
Sweet White Wine

The 1980 Eiswein is a sweet dessert wine produced from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine. The sugars and other dissolved solids do not freeze, but the water does, allowing for a more concentrated grape juice to develop.

The high residual sugar concentration give these wines great ageing properties - we tasted this bottle over two days. Served chilled from the fridge after a 4 hour decant. The colour is a light-amber with green tinge around the rim of the glass. Fresher than another bottle from a different region. There are honey notes, apricots and sultana notes on the nose.
