Croft Port

croft portCroft is one of the most distinguished of all Port houses. Founded in 1588, it is the oldest firm still active today as a Port wine producer.

The company is renowned above all for its Vintage Ports as well as for its range of wood aged reserves and tawnies, time-honoured styles refined by skill and experience passed down the generations.

In spite of its rich heritage and history spanning over four centuries, Croft has never been constrained by tradition. Today, as in the past, it maintains a pioneering spirit, continuing to create innovative new styles such as Croft Pink, the first ever rosé Port.

Behind every great wine producer is a great vineyard. The cornerstone of Croft’s distinctive house style is the famous Quinta da Roêda, described as the jewel of Port wine estates. The wines of this magnificent property, which contains some of the oldest vineyards in the Douro Valley, are the heart of Croft’s Vintage Port blend.

Tasting Note
Dense inky core fading to a magenta rim. A seductive Croft nose, ripe and voluptuous but with the depth and density characteristic of the 2017 vintage. As usual, plump, juicy blackcurrant, black cherry and raspberry form the backdrop. However, the nose is soon drawn into a vortex of heady, complex aroma in which resiny scents of eucalyptus and gumcistus blend with pungent notes of sage and mint, fresh hints of grapefruit and a mellow spiciness.

Tasting Notes
Croft has announced the release of the first Vintage Port made from the produce of the old, historic vineyard plots on the company’s flagship property, Quinta da Roêda. Named Serikos, a historical reference to the property’s involvement in the production of silk following the destruction of its vineyards by Phylloxera and to the silken quality of its wines, it will be made available on allocation in very limited quantities.

Croft Port, 2012

Quinta de Roeda HALF BOTTLE 37.5 cl

The 2012 Croft Vintage Port Wine has a dense ruby black core surrounded by a purple red rim. The nose is true to the Roeda style, a luscious fruitiness combined with the resiny, musky redolence of wild herbs and gum cistus. However, the year with its typical purity and finesse has placed this finely constituted wine at the elegant and subtle end of the Roeda spectrum. Blended with the typically jammy fruit are fresher notes of raspberry and apricot and the palate is lifted by a crisp acidity and supported by a dense warp of firm sinewy tannins. Slightly more restrained and clearly delineated than some Roeda vintages, the wine nevertheless displays the seductive ripe fruitiness which is the hallmark of this great historic estate.

Croft Port, 2011

Vintage Port DOUBLE MAGNUM 3.0L

This 2011 Vintage Port Wine from Croft is deep purple black in colour. The complex seductive nose has the archetypal Croft opulence but displays impressive depth, background and reserves of aroma. A rich, powerful fruitiness provides the backdrop for heady scents of blossom and rock rose. Luscious ripe berry fruit flavour surges though the palate. The wine’s velvety texture is underpinned by taut, muscular, perfectly integrated tannins, which provide stamina with an attractive firmness and vigour to the finish. More virile and structured than some recent Vintages from this classic house, the 2011 nevertheless displays all the rich ripe fruitiness and exotic scented character associated with the Croft house style.

Croft Port, 2011

Vintage Port IMPERIAL BOTTLE 6.0L

This 2011 Vintage Port Wine from Croft comes from the near perfect viticultural conditions in the Douro Valley and Croft's highly regarded Quinta da Roêda during 2011. This Quinta always forms the core around which Croft craft their Vintage Port blend, yet in this excellent year all of the blend's components have been sourced from here, producing a scented, exotic and lusciously opulent style. In the words of wine-maker David guimareans, the high perfomance of Quinta da Roêda gave this vintage 'an additional layer of density and depth of flavour' with silky, integrated tannins and powerful grip on the finish.

Croft Port, 2007

Vintage Port MAGNUM

a 2007 Vintage Port Wine from Croft.
"There is a nice limpidity on this Croft 2007. It is not the power that strikes you but the purity with black cherries, liquorice, violets and a hint of iodine. Very tight and focused. The palate is full-bodied with chewy tannins on the entry, pure blackberry, raspberry, white pepper and Asian spice towards the finish. Very fine focus, very pure and harmonious. Sensuous finish but it just tapers away when I need more grip and assertiveness. Still, this is a lovely Croft." Neil Martin , Wine Journal ***93/100 (Outstanding) Wine Journal***

Croft Port, 2003

Vintage Port

A 2003 vintage Port Wine from Croft Port. A medium intensity Port with a garnet core and mahogany rim. A lovely pronounced nose of figs and prunes, with some walnut characters. Also slightly earthy. Good sweet fruit on the palate and a full mouth feel. This is followed by a long, smooth nutty finish. After a 40-year absence, the 2003 Croft was made by the use of traditional treading in stone Lagers. The 2003 reflects the benefits of two years of strict vineyard management with gloriously pure fruit and scents of wild blueberry and crême de more. The purity and expression of fruit persists on the palate, supported by dense but very svelte tannins, culminating in a long finish.

Croft Port, 2000

Vintage Port

Reviews: An outstanding port rating 90 points. "A striking, individualistic nose of spring flowers, blackberries, blueberries, and lead pencil shavings emerges from this saturated purple-coloured 2000. Evolved yet expansive, sweet, and generous, it admirably conceals moderately high tannins under a wealth of fruit and glycerin. The aromatic profile and attack merit a score in the mid-nineties, but the finish is short, thus lowering the overall rating. Croft Port, 1994

Vintage Port

"The 1994 Croft exhibits an impressive dark ruby/purple color, and a developed, forward, more evolved style than expected. It is moderately sweet, full-bodied, expansive, pure, and rich, but made in an up-front, flattering style. Although outstanding, it is not one of the superstars of the vintage. It will keep for twenty years. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2020". 90 points. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate.

Croft Port, 1991

Croft Vintage Port

The 1991 Croft Vintage Port has been awarded this 94 points (Outstanding ) by Wine Ppectator.

Croft vintages are only declared a few times a decade, when a remarkable year has been had. This is a rounded, supple port with a phenomenal mouthfeel. Will continue to keep for another five or so years.

Deep, opaque, just turning on the rim. Still quite a dense nose with underlying plummy fruit and floral maturity just starting to emerge. Full, rich and fleshy with some bitter chocolate intensity at the core and a firm tannic grip building towards the finish. Alc: 20.5%. Drink 2011-25.
