Description

The Amarone 1965 Angelo Rocca is a rare and historically significant red wine from the Veneto region of Italy, produced in a period when Amarone style winemaking was still relatively traditional and much less standardized than today. Wines from this era are highly collectible and represent an important part of Valpolicella’s evolution into one of Italy’s most iconic wine styles.

Tasting Notes:

The 1965 vintage is fully mature and deeply tertiary in character. The nose shows aromas of dried black cherry, raisined fruit, plum, leather, tobacco, dried herbs, cocoa, and forest floor, with subtle balsamic and spicy undertones. With gentle aeration, notes of old wood, tea leaf, and earthy complexity may appear.

On the palate it is soft, warm, and highly evolved, with fully integrated tannins and gentle acidity. The fruit has transformed into dried and oxidative notes, giving way to a savory profile dominated by leather, spice, and earthy nuances. The finish is long, mellow, and reflective, typical of very old Amarone-style wines.

Serving & Food Pairing:

Best served at 18°C. Given its age, extreme care is required when handling the bottle. Gentle pouring is recommended; decanting only if necessary to remove sediment.

It pairs well with:

braised and slow-cooked meats
game dishes
aged cheeses
mushroom-based recipes
rich traditional Northern Italian cuisine

Producer:

Angelo Rocca & Figli is a historic Veneto winery known for producing traditional regional wines, including Valpolicella and Amarone styles. The estate has long been associated with classic production methods rooted in the Veneto winemaking tradition, particularly during the mid-20th century when Amarone was still developing its modern identity.
