Description
Gigi Rosso 2014 Barolo Riserva dell’Ulivo – Arione, Piedmont
From the revered vineyards of Arione in Serralunga d’Alba, Gigi Rosso’s 2014 Riserva dell’Ulivo embodies the grace and endurance of traditional Barolo. Crafted only in select years and aged extensively in oak casks and bottle, this Riserva represents the pinnacle of the estate’s Nebbiolo production — a wine of profound depth, elegance, and terroir-driven authenticity. Despite the cooler and more challenging 2014 vintage, it displays remarkable precision, purity, and balance.
In the glass, the wine presents a deep garnet hue with orange reflections at the rim — a hallmark of mature Nebbiolo. The bouquet is wonderfully complex, combining aromas of dried rose, cherry, and redcurrant with layers of leather, cedar, balsamic spice, and earthy truffle. As it opens, hints of tobacco, mint, and sweet herbs reveal themselves, giving the wine an alluring aromatic tapestry that speaks to both age and artistry.
On the palate, Riserva dell’Ulivo is structured yet refined — a harmony of ripe red fruit, polished tannins, and savoury depth. Flavours of sour cherry, dried fig, and spice mingle with notes of liquorice and undergrowth, carried by lively acidity that gives the wine freshness and length. The finish is long, elegant, and hauntingly persistent, leaving a memory of dried flowers and mineral finesse.
Now at perfect maturity, this 2014 Barolo Riserva is a wine for contemplation and celebration. Decant gently to awaken its full aromatic complexity and serve at 18 °C alongside rich dishes such as braised beef, wild mushroom risotto, or aged Parmigiano-Reggiano. A testament to the enduring craftsmanship of Gigi Rosso — graceful, soulful, and unmistakably Barolo.
Gigi Rosso winery sits in Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of Barolo land. It carries the name of its founder Gigi, one of Barolo’s and Langhe pioneers. The next generation, Maurizio and his son Andreas are now managing Gigi Rosso winery. The passage to the second and third generation brings energy and new ideas to the business. As Gigi expressed in his own words: “I was born in the vineyards. I grew up in the vineyards. And the vineyards are my heart and soul. The Langhe are my home. This land gave me a very precious gift. As a thank you, every year, I harvest its fruits and look after them like a mother looks after her babies. They call me enologist, they say I’m a wine expert, they refer to me as a pioneer. But there’s only one truth: when nature speaks I listen. My land tells a unique story and I’m always listening”.

The 2014 Barolo Arione is a hearty and savory expression with a dark color and mid-weight appeal. The bouquet opens to aromas of blackberry and bitter cherry with spice, rusty nail, licorice and toasted almond. The wine offers a slightly gritty texture in terms of mouthfeel. The finish is lean and compact. The jury is out on where its future evolution will take it. Monica Larmer- Robert Parker's- Wine Advocate.
