Description
The 2002 Château Climens is a graceful and delicately styled Barsac, reflecting the cooler, more classical character of the vintage. The nose opens with lifted aromas of citrus zest, white peach and fresh apricot, layered with notes of acacia blossom, honey and subtle vanilla. It is refined and beautifully aromatic, with Climens’ hallmark purity clearly on display.
On the palate, the wine is elegant and finely textured rather than overtly rich. Flavours of candied citrus, pear and light tropical fruit are supported by vibrant acidity, giving the wine a clean, refreshing profile. Hints of honey, almond cream and gentle spice add depth without heaviness, making this a wonderfully balanced and food-friendly Sauternes/Barsac.
As the wine evolves in the glass, more complexity emerges—notes of chamomile, beeswax, subtle saffron and warm pastry broaden the flavour profile. The sweetness is measured and harmonious, carried by Barsac’s trademark minerality and brightness. The finish is long, poised and beautifully refined.
A charming, elegant Climens, the 2002 is drinking perfectly now, offering finesse over power. Ideal with fruit-based desserts, blue cheeses, foie gras or simply enjoyed on its own, it is a superb example of a lighter, beautifully balanced Barsac from one of the region’s most consistent and highly regarded estates.
Château Climens, classified as a Premier Cru Classé in 1855, is located in Barsac at the heart of the Sauternes region. The estate is dedicated entirely to Sémillon, producing wines renowned for their purity, elegance and ability to age. With a history dating back to the 16th century, Climens has consistently upheld a reputation for excellence, crafting some of the world’s most admired sweet wines that reflect both terroir and tradition.
