  • Description

The 1985 vintage of Château d’Issan is a beautifully mature expression of classic Margaux elegance. A particularly successful vintage for the appellation, 1985 was warm and generous, producing wines with supple fruit, refined tannins, and early accessibility—yet the best examples, like this one, have continued to age gracefully. At this point in its evolution, d’Issan 1985 offers a fully resolved and deeply aromatic experience, ideal for those who appreciate the charm of traditional claret at maturity.

The nose is graceful and layered, with aromas of dried redcurrant, rose petal, cedar, and forest floor. With air, subtle notes of tobacco leaf, leather, graphite, and old library wood emerge, reflecting the wine’s age and tertiary complexity. There’s a touch of Margaux’s hallmark floral lift—violet and lavender—which adds to its aromatic refinement.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and silky, with a gentle flow of red fruit, earthy spice, and savoury tones. The tannins are soft and integrated, supporting a core of dried cherry, raspberry, and a whisper of cassis. While not a powerhouse, the balance and finesse are remarkable, offering a persistent and harmonious finish with hints of mushroom, iron, and sweet herbs.

This 1985 d’Issan is fully mature and best enjoyed over the next few years. No extensive decanting is required—30 minutes will suffice to allow its nuances to open. It pairs beautifully with classic French cuisine such as roast guinea fowl, lamb cutlets, or wild mushroom fricassée, all of which complement its aged Margaux subtlety.
