Description
1982 Gattinara – Luigi Nervi, Riserva (Alto Piemonte, Italy)
A beautifully mature Alto Piemonte Nebbiolo (Spanna) that trades power for perfume and mineral finesse. Brick-garnet with a broad tawny rim, it opens on dried cherry and cranberry, rose and violet, with cedar, sweet tobacco and tea leaf, then the tell-tale iron/hematite and blood-orange lift of Gattinara’s porphyry soils. Mid-weight and silken on the palate: lively, cool-climate acidity carries red-cherry fruit, dried herbs and subtle underbrush; tannins are fine and fully resolved. The finish is long and tapering with cherry skin, orange zest, graphite and dried flowers.
Producer note: Luigi Nervi is Gattinara’s historic estate (founded early 1900s), renowned for classically raised Nebbiolo from volcanic slopes—large old casks, long bottle rest, and an emphasis on elegance and aromatic lift. The Riserva selection marks longer ageing and extra depth.
Serve: 16–18 °C. Stand upright 12–24 hours; very gentle decant for sediment just before pouring.
Food pairing: Roast chicken with herbs, tajarin with butter and sage, mushroom/porcini risotto, aged alpine cheeses.
