Description
THE WINE
Building on more than 200 years of winemaking experience, our Aged Tawny Ports are an homage to the craftsmanship and time-honoured skills, handed down across generations, that go in to producing each bottle. This extraordinary wine is our tribute to the profound value of patience. Having spent decades ageing in seasoned oak casks, crossing generations, this special port has developed an extraordinary profile of unparalleled elegance.
Our Head Winemaker and Master Blender, Charles Symington (4th generation), blended this 80 Year Old Tawny Port to mark the 80th birthday of his father and
predecessor, Peter Symington (3rd generation), and celebrate his distinguished career. Such was its immense quality, the decision was taken to bottle and release it on a limited basis. The 80 Year Old blend blend consists of wines from the 1940s, many of which date to the Second World War.
TASTING NOTE
This venerable wine allures and seduces such are its mesmerising aromas and flavours. The range of aromas is extraordinary, combining walnuts, treacle, honey, coffee and dried figs. The luxuriantly textured, creamy palate is simultaneously concentrated and gloriously smooth and polished with layers of complexity. There is soft caramel,
mandarin orange, quince, praline, vanilla and then some butterscotch on the long aftertaste, which ends on notes of tobacco and black tea. The discreet acidity provides remarkable freshness, grace and balance. This magnificent old port is the embodiment of vinous sophistication and a delight to the senses.
