1946 Cave de Rivesaltes, Rivesaltes – Vin Doux Naturel

An extraordinary and historic Vin Doux Naturel from the immediate post-war vintage, this 1946 Cave de Rivesaltes stands as a testament to the longevity and depth of the great fortified wines of Roussillon. Produced from Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, and Macabeu, this wine was fortified during fermentation to retain natural sweetness, then aged for decades in old oak casks within the cool cellars of the Rivesaltes cooperative — one of France’s most respected centres for traditional VDN production.

In the glass, it gleams a deep amber-mahogany with glowing copper highlights. The bouquet is profoundly complex, offering dried fig, date, and apricot, evolving into toffee, walnut, orange peel, cocoa, and polished oak. Distinct rancio notes — that signature oxidative nuttiness — bring aromas of antique wood, spice, and salted caramel, revealing the decades of patient ageing.

On the palate, it is silky and beautifully layered, delivering flavours of candied citrus, molasses, coffee, and roasted nut. Despite its richness, the wine remains balanced by a fine thread of acidity, giving lift and freshness. The finish is endless, echoing with honey, dried fruit, and warm spice — a contemplative, almost timeless experience.

    Serving Suggestions
Serve lightly chilled (12–14 °C) to capture both its aromatic intensity and freshness. Decant gently to remove any fine sediment.

Superb with caramel desserts, tarte tatin, or dark chocolate truffles. Also pairs elegantly with blue cheeses such as Stilton or Roquefort, or aged Comté for a nutty, savoury contrast. For a luxurious match, serve alongside foie gras or toasted walnuts.

Once opened, it will keep gracefully for up to a month if re-corked and stored in a cool, dark place.
