Description
1987 Rosso di Montalcino – Castiglion del Bosco (Tuscany, Italy)
A rare, fully mature Rosso di Montalcino showing the graceful, savoury side of aged Sangiovese Grosso. Brick-garnet with a tawny rim, it opens on dried cherry and cranberry, rose petal, cedar and sweet tobacco, with hints of orange peel, tea leaf and a gentle balsamic note. Mid-weight and silky on the palate: lively, old-school acidity carries red-cherry fruit, dried herbs and subtle leather; tannins are fine and resolved, the finish tapering with cherry skin, cedar spice and dried flowers.
Producer note: Castiglion del Bosco is one of Montalcino’s historic estates, rooted on the north-west side of the appellation. Classic, Sangiovese-focused wines shaped by altitude, galestro/clay soils and a traditional hand.
Serve: 16–18 °C. Stand upright 12–24 hours; very gentle decant for sediment just before pouring.
Food pairing: Roast chicken with herbs, wild-mushroom/porcini risotto, pappardelle al ragù, aged pecorino.
