The 1971 vintage had some definite high points, albeit matched by some lows. In France, the vintage for Bordeaux was reasonably good; however, the year was sublime for Sauternes. Both Burgundy and Champagne also enjoyed excellent years, as did the Rhône, Loire and Alsace. In Italy, the vintage was also very good for Piedmont and particularly Tuscany, which saw the advent of some notable Super Tuscans, specifically Tignanello. Any of these wines would make a fabulous 54 year old wine gift for an Anniversary or birthday.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Palmer Port 1975 Single Harvest Tawny Port
  • Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac 1971 Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
  • Barbera 1971 Bersano
  • Chateau Brane Cantenac 1971 Cantenac Margaux 2nd Growth Classification
  • Chateau Rayne Vigneau 1971 Sauternes
  • Barolo 1971 Giordano Riserva

  •
This Year in History: Fun Facts: The United Kingdom became the sixth nation successfully to launch a satellite into orbit using its own launch vehicle, the Prospero (X-3) experimental communications satellite (built at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough), using a Black Arrow carrier rocket from Woomera Launch Area 5 in South Australia.
Eurovision Winner: Monaco with the song "Un Banc, Un Arbre, Une Rue" by Severine
Top Grossing Movie: Diamonds Are Forever

Bordeaux: 1971 was a very good wine vintage, whose only failing was to be overshadowed by the outstanding 1970 vintage. The crop size of the 1971 vintage was very small making wines of this year a rarity. Well-stored examples of wine are likely to remain mature for a few more years. Sweet wines such as Sauternes and Barsac were outstanding in this year and will last for many decades to come.

Italian: Considered to be one of the greatest vintages of the 20th century for Italian wine, excellent growing conditions during 1971 produced a small crop of rich, full bodied wines that have aged gracefully and will last for many years. These wines would make an excellent 50 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary. In Piedmont, Barolo and Barbaresco are outstanding with a high level of consistency. In Tuscany, the best results were in Chianti where this year was officially rated a 5-star vintage. Many of the wines have shown exceptional ageing qualities. It was also a good vintage for Brunello. A 1971 Italian wine would be our recommendation for a superb 54 year old wine gift for a special anniversary or birthday.

    Colheita Port, Douro
    75cl Bottle

Release of just 24 bottles of the Palmer 1971 Colheita Port for the UK.
Port from 1971 is extremely rare. We became aware of a small quantity that was acquired by Fernando van Zeller in early 2021 from a family owned vineyard. Recently certified by the IVDP, it is one of the few Colheita Ports from 1971 in existence.

    Tasting Notes
This is a Port matured in cask for five decades. Medium Tawny colour with aromatic notes of coffee, molasses, figs and cigar box. An elegant light-bodied port with integrated acidity and a subtle texture. Long, smooth finish.

    Amarone della Valpolicella, 1971

    Canrine Lamberti

This wine is made from grapes harvested in various vineyards located on hills in the Valpolicella zone (Mezzane and Tregnago hills). Different sources and different grape varieties are important to obtain well-balanced wines with the fine structure that only a few single areas in the Valpolicella zone can provide. Notes: Color: strong ruby red. Clear and transparent. Bouquet: notes of vanilla and ethereal airs depending on the period of aging in the barrel; notes of sweet fruits such as currants, blueberries, cherries depending on the varieties of grapes. Flavor: wine with a velvety, raisiny character combined with the structure and typical stylish bitterness to give it good balance.

About Chateau Boyd-Cantenac Since the early 1930s, Boyd Cantenac has been owned by the Guillemet family who also run the nearby Chateau Pouget. The proprietor actually resides at Chateau Pouget since there is no official chateau at Boyd Cantenac, and the wines are vinified and cellared in a warehouse adjoining Pouget. Despite this arrangement, the wines of Boyd Cantenac are always produced with an overriding sense of attention to detail.

    Chateau Brane Cantenac, 1971

On the decline yet still life. Fewer fruit notes and more tertiary notes. Forrest floor, truffles, meat, umami, chocolate. Very interesting and was fun to try to a 50th birthday celebration. Color was still there with garnet hues. Really exemplifies how Bordeaux can age. Cellar Tracker Review posted 2021

Château Brane-Cantenac is a renowned wine estate situated in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux, France. With roots tracing back to the 18th century, the estate has earned a reputation for crafting exceptional red wines. Encompassing approximately 75 hectares, the vineyard benefits from gravelly and sandy soils, ideal for cultivating Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot grapes.

    Chateau Broustet, 1971

    Sauternes, Sweet White Wine

The 1971 Château Broustet, a Deuxième Cru Classé from the Barsac appellation, represents a mature expression of Sauternes from a vintage noted for its elegance and freshness. While specific tasting notes for this vintage are scarce, insights can be drawn from the estate's winemaking practices and the general characteristics of the 1971 harvest.

In 1971, Sauternes and Barsac experienced favorable conditions for the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), leading to wines that, while not exceptionally concentrated, offered freshness and refined acidity. Château Broustet's vineyards, situated on clay-limestone and gravel soils, are planted predominantly with Sémillon, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle.

    Margaux 3rd Growth Classification

The 1971 Château Giscours is a fully mature Third Growth Margaux, offering a rare glimpse into Bordeaux’s past. While the 1971 vintage was not considered a landmark year, Giscours has aged remarkably well, developing a complex and nuanced profile that will appeal to those who appreciate older wines.

Now over 50 years old, this wine displays a deep garnet hue with slight bricking at the edges. The aromas are rich and layered, featuring black fruit, dark chocolate, herbs, and earthy undertones. On the palate, it retains elegance and balance, with a refined texture and softened tannins, though some tasters note a slightly rustic finish.

    Chateau Liot, 1971

    Barsac, Sweet Wine

The 1971 Château Liot Sauternes is a rare and mature sweet wine from the Barsac appellation in Bordeaux. Château Liot is known for producing elegant, botrytis-affected wines primarily from Sémillon, with smaller proportions of Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. While detailed tasting notes for the 1971 vintage are scarce, the wine's longevity suggests it has developed complex tertiary aromas and flavors over time.

Given the age of this vintage, the wine likely exhibits a deep amber color, with notes of dried fruits, honey, and nuts on the nose. On the palate, one might expect a balance between residual sweetness and acidity, with flavors of caramel, apricot, and perhaps a hint of spice.

It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

    Fracia, 1971

    Nino Negri - Riserva
    *** Clearance Offer | Was £99 | Now £50 ***

This red wine is deep crimson in colour, and has a rich bouquet of dried cherries, pencil shavings, tar and roses – the tell-tale sign of a wine made from Nebbiolo. As might be expected for a mountain-grown wine made from Nebbiolo, it is light-bodied and laced with grippy tannins. Although generally weightier and more concentrated than standard Rosso di Valtellina wines, they are almost always lighter in both body and power than the most famous of all Nebbiolo-based wines, Barolo and Barbaresco.

Produced using a careful selection of grapes from the Garda Classico Rosso. The grapes once harvested are placed in a “fruttaio” (a well ventilated room) to dry out, they are pressed and the wine is “rested” in wooden barrels for a year. Here is a wine with a deep translucent red colour and spicy perfume. A harmonious wine, dry and velvety with a hint of tartness. Served with spiedo (a local spit roast from the city of Brescia and Lombardy) with game and roast meats.

    Enologica Valtelinese

Inferno is one of five viticultural sub-zones specifically identified as producing Valtellina wines of particularly high quality: the other four are Grumello, Sassella, Maroggia and Valgella. Inferno means 'hell' in Italian, and refers to the slopes between Sondrio town and the village of Tresivio. Although DOC laws do not explain the origins of this name, it has been suggested that in summer the slopes here get noticeably hotter than the rest of the valley. Just across Sondrio to the west is Sassella, the finest of the Valtellina sub-zones.

    Pelaverga, 1971

    Giordano

Pelaverga vine is certainly a native of Saluzzo. In the Turin area it is known as synonymous with Cari. Pelaverga vine was then introduced in the town of Verduno in the 17th century by Beato Sebastiano Valfrè, who got some vine plants grown in the Saluzzo area. The vine, due to the scarse production among other characteristics, seemed doomed to disappear. In the ‘70s, thanks to the intuition of some winegrowers of Verduno, the Pelaverga grape was recovered and saved from extinction. The berry is black large, elliptical, short with very waxy, blue-purple skin. The bunch is medium to large, conical or pyramidal elongated, generally compact with a medium-small, pentagonal, five-lobed leaf.

    Chateau La Gurgue, 1971

    Margaux

Château La Gurgue, situated in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux, has a rich history of producing wines that reflect the elegance and complexity characteristic of the region. The 1971 vintage, while overshadowed by the exceptional 1970, was considered very good, yielding wines that have aged gracefully over the decades.

Specific tasting notes for the 1971 Château La Gurgue are scarce, making it challenging to provide detailed insights into its current profile. However, given the general quality of the 1971 vintage in Bordeaux, it's plausible that well-preserved bottles may exhibit tertiary aromas such as leather, tobacco, and earthy notes, with softened tannins and a harmonious palate.
