It was a legendary year for Bordeaux, particularly in the Médoc, and prices are likely to still be running high. Burgundy, although not quite as dizzyingly great. Italy’s Barolo and Barbaresco also enjoyed a spectacular year and there should be many examples of both still drinking very well. For Port, 2000 was one of the great years where most, if not all, major Port houses declared. Many of these wines will be drinking for decades to come and make an obvious choice for a gift for those who can afford. Both Armagnac and whisky are available from this year, and are likely to be drinking well.

Any of these wines would make a fabulous wine gift for a 26th Anniversary or birthday.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Quinta Da Devesa 2000 Colheita Port
  • Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac 2000 Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac
  • Rosso Toscano 2000 Tenuta di Trinoro
  • Chateau Cissac 2000 Haut Medoc
  • Taittinger 2000 Vintage Champagne Robert Rauschenberg design

This Year in History: Fun Fact: Millennium celebrations take place throughout the UK. The Millennium Dome in London is officially opened by HM The Queen.
Eurovision Winner: Denmark with the song "Fly on the Wings of Love" by the Olsen Brothers
Top Grossing Movie: Mission Impossible 2

Bordeaux: The fabled millennium vintage produced wines that are of true greatness and longevity. They are characterised as being powerful and concentrated, with high tannins. The quality is due to ideal weather from the end of September; this allowed the grapes to develop thick skins from lack of moisture. For the first time in many years there was little rain in the harvest season allowing the skins to thicken further. This served to further concentrate the wines. These have evolved slowly and will continue to do so for decades to come.

Champagne: Spring began well with excellent growth showing by the end of April beginning of May and flowering in early June. Rainfall in July was four times higher than average and a hailstorm hit, destroying many vines but August was sunny and dry. The wet weather though meant vines were slow to and acidity was low by end of August but good weather throughout September helped ripen the fruit more fully and the sugar and acid levels were registering about 9.5° and 10°, and 7.5 and 8 respectively, so things looked up. The vintage started in mid-September and the sun shone for the duration of the picking which lasted two weeks, and the harvest remained of remarkable quality from beginning to end.

Italian: 2000 was one of the finest post-war vintages for Piedmont wines. The wines are still tannic and youthful, and will last for many years to come.

Portugal: The 2000 Vintage was the first to be declared in the 21st century and will be remembered for the immense concentration of its wines and for the small quantities produced. The wines show tremendous promise, with intense berry fruit aromas and full-bodied structure. They should remain at their peak between now and 2040 at the very least, if kept well.

    Quarles Harris, 2000

    Vintage Port

Quarles Harris Vintage Port 2000 is a rich, classically structured wine from one of the long-established Symington family houses. The 2000 vintage is widely regarded as one of the best early-millennium declarations, delivering depth, purity and impressive ageing potential. Now with 25 years in bottle, this Port is entering a superb drinking window, showing both youthful energy and the first signs of mature complexity.

The nose is expressive and inviting, offering aromas of black cherry, damson and cassis intertwined with notes of dark chocolate, violet and a touch of liquorice. Hints of warm spice and subtle eucalyptus bring further lift, making this a beautifully aromatic and layered vintage expression.

    Smith Woodhouse, 2000

    Vintage Port

2000 Smith Woodhouse – Vintage Port (Douro, Portugal)

A powerful, classically framed Smith Woodhouse from a declared year—still youthful at heart but opening beautifully. Deep purple-garnet with only a hint of bricking at the rim. The nose is vibrant and layered: blackberry and black cherry compote, cassis and violets, with cocoa, liquorice, cedar and a cool eucalyptus lift.

Rich, mouthfilling palate with sweet dark-berry fruit over lively acidity and firm, fine tannins—polished but still present. Notes of dark chocolate, espresso, clove and crushed rock lead to a long, mouthcoating finish of blackberry, cocoa and orange peel.

    Taylor Fladgate, 2000

    Vintage Port
    ***98 Points- Wine Advocate***

    98 Points (Parker)
    98 Points (Wine Journal)

Reviews: "Among the most saturated blue/purple/black-colored examples of the vintage, Taylor's 2000 tastes like a young vintage of Chateau Latour on steroids. Aromas of graphite, blackberry liqueur, creme de cassis and smoke jump from the glass. Spectacularly concentrated and enormously endowed, with sweetness allied to ripe tannin, decent acidity, and layer upon layer of fruit and extract, this is the leading candidate for the port of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2040." Parker, Wine Advocate 2002.

"An opaque black/purple hue. The nose has certainly shut down since tasted a couple of years ago.
