Overall, 2015 was a blinder of a vintage, especially for the classics. There are plenty of options for both drinking now or for cellaring later, so take your pick. Europe had an intensely hot summer and many regions were affected by drought, but luck seemed to be mostly on the growers’ side as the majority pulled through, delivering stunning wines. Any of these wines would make a fabulous 10 year old wine gift for an Anniversary or birthday.
Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:
This Year in History: Fun Fact: The first-generation Apple Watch was released.
Eurovision Winner: Sweden with the song "Heroes" by Mans Zelmerlow.
Top Grossing Movie: Star Wars Ep. VII: The Force Awakens
Italian: In Piemonte an exceptional vintage was produced, with great promise thanks to healthy grapes and exceptionally regular bunches. In Tuscany, a cold and rainy winter preceded an irregular spring followed by exceptionally hot, dry summer weather, creating small bunches of Sangiovese, so yields were down across the region however concentration levels concentration levels are very good.
Portugal: Abundant rainfall marked the start of the viticultural year, replenishing depleted soil water reserves. This was to prove crucial due to the very dry winter, spring and summer that followed which was the hottest and driest of the last 36 years. It was the hottest June of the last half-century resulting in exceptionally low yields at harvest time. The conditions leading up to the harvest were excellent and a little late rain followed by sunshine just before picking offset some of the heat stress to produce some of the best grapes in memory (particularly Touriga Franca). The vintage was exceptional but held back from declaration.

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

This 2015 Vintage Port Wine is only the second Cockburn’s vintage Port made by the Symington family since it acquired the brand name from Beam in 2010, having bought the vineyards and cellars in 2006. Its declaration of a 2015 vintage Port is the latest in a number of innovations and investment to mark the company’s bicentenary, with the brand having been founded in 1815. Up until the 1950's Cockburn’s was one of the Douro’s leading Port producers, with its Ports commanding some of the highest prices at international wine auctions. However its rapid expansion into the mass market in the second half of the century served to damage its reputation for fine wines. …
