Vintage Port

From the legendary 1963 vintage, the Quinta do Noval exhibits power, dimension and real character. After 50 years the Ports never fail to impress.

The 1963 Quinta do Noval has a light garnet hue with degradated deep brick rim. The nose has scents of cherry, spice, iron rust and wild strawberry.
The palate is medium-bodied, quite pretty, with damson, cherries and a touch of sloes. Quite cohesive. The finish is pleasantly harmonious with good vigour. This is a lovely, elegant mature port.

This VP had a very dark ruby color and was clearly from a perfectly stored bottle. The 1963 is as lithe and graceful as a trapeze artist, and showed what perfection in balance is all about. Ruby highlights surviving in the colour. Deep, intense, Burgundian richness. At first the spirit is rather overpowering. Then dark chocolate starts appearing, followed by herbal, gum cistus, licorice, cigar box, leathery quality really comes through in the mouth and a slightly medicinal character. Medium length.

This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades. …
