Taylor Fladgate, 1966

Single Harvest Tawny Port

Taylors have just announced a limited release of their 1966 Single Harvest Tawny Port. This is a new release of a rich, mellow and spicy 1966 Single Harvest Port.

It is presented in a classic Taylor’s frosted bottle, and packaged in a high quality beech-wood box.

During its five decades of ageing in oak casks, this wine has taken on an attractive pale mahogany colour with olive amber highlights. On the nose the wine displays fine oaky aromas and complex spicy, nutty, cigar box notes against a warm mellow background of butterscotch and molasses. The smooth velvety palate is lifted by a crisp acidity which gives the wine an attractive freshness in spite of its age.

Viera de Souza, 1966

Vintage Port

Viera de Sousa 1966 Vintage Port is a rare and fascinating wine from one of the more under-the-radar but deeply respected family-run Port producers. The Viera de Sousa family has been involved in winemaking in the Douro Valley for generations, though their name has gained broader recognition only more recently. A 1966 vintage from them represents not just a well-aged Port, but a beautiful piece of family heritage and old-school craftsmanship.

The 1966 vintage itself was a declared year and widely considered excellent — not quite as powerful as 1963, but producing wines of superb elegance, structure, and ageing potential.

Taylor Fladgate, 1963

Vintage Port

Ruby highlights surviving in the colour. Deep, intense, Burgundian richness. At first the spirit is rather overpowering. Then dark chocolate starts appearing, followed by herbal, gum cistus, licorice, cigar box, leathery quality really comes through in the mouth and a slightly medicinal character. Medium length.

This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades.

1961 Calem Port, 1961

Colheita Port
Decanter 2020 Best in Show

Each year, these tawny port wines reveal special characteristics, ever developing whilst they age in the wood casks for a minimum of 8 years. Tawny colour, a smooth bouquet of vanilla, honey and dried fruit. Drink on its own or with your favourite cakes and deserts.

Decanter 2020 World Wine Awards Best in Show Award

Review in Decanter
"This single-vintage tawny port is older than its 40 Year Old Best In Show sibling, but the fact that it is unblended (and has perhaps spent time in glass as well as barrel) gives it a very different character: lighter, more graceful and more fugitive, yet at the same time refined, long, graciously but not cloyingly sweet, and with a succulence and silkiness rarely rivalled by other fortified wines.
