Vintage Port

Quinta de La Rosa is a small estate in the heart of the Port wine-growing region in Alto Douro, near Pinhao, owned and operated by the Bergqvist family.

The Quinta and its vineyards were given to the Bergqvist family as a Christening present by the Feuerheerds, who established the property in 1906.

It remains one of the few Single Quinta where the vineyards start at the bank of the Douro and rise 450 meters to the towering top of the mountain. From the river's edge to the top, one passes through 11 different microclimates. This gives La Rosa great flexibility to add variety and complexity to its Ports. …

This wine is a mysterious phenomenon, a magical wine produced in extremely limited quantities and only in a few years each decade. The 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva Quinta do Poço do Lobo is unoaked and comes in at 13.5% alcohol. This Reserva has more power than the regular reds and much riper fruit. It is bigger and fresher in every respect. Intense and powerful, this is nuanced by cassis and red fruits. It ends with a big finish. There are some typical nuances of aging Cab too. So, while it is fresh for its age, it hardly tastes like a young red. Many will consider that a good thing. …

The 1992 Calem Quinta da Foz is a beautiful tawny colour indicating maturity. On the nose it has chocolate and creme caramel together with a candied notes. On the palate this is quite complex - medium bodied with well integrated, tannins. A little sweeter than some ports but showing well. Long, long finish. Rich ruby color that is nearly opaque. It presents notes of strawberry, molasses and others mentioned root beer which I did not really get, but thought was worth noting. This Nacional displays excellent concentration and structure, with medium to full-bodied juice. It possesses young blackberry fruit with a unique balsamic component, and shows its fine balance and some powerful tannins that will allow this wine to age for a few decades.
