Barolo, 1987

S. Biagio di Roggero

1987 Barolo – S. Biagio di Roggero (Piedmont, Italy)

The nose lifts with dried cherry and cranberry, rose petal and violet, cedar and sweet tobacco, touched by orange peel, tea leaf and a gentle tar/balsamic note. Mid-weight and savoury on the palate: lively, old-school acidity carries red-cherry fruit, dried herbs and subtle leather; tannins are fine and resolved, giving a silky, tapering finish of cherry skin, cedar spice and dried flowers.

Producer note: S. Biagio di Roggero is the Roggero family’s historic La Morra estate, bottling under the “San Biagio” name for generations (first own labels traced to the 1920s).

Graham's Port, 1987

Malvedos Vintage Port

In declared Vintage years the wines of Malvedos form the fundamental part of the blend which makes up Grahams Vintage Ports. In many other years when there is not enough top quality wine for Grahams to declare a Vintage, the wine of Malvedos is nevertheless so fine that it is bottled on its own, unblended, when two years old and left to mature in bottle like other Vintage Ports. Unlike declared Vintages, Malvedos Vintage Port is normally only shipped when ready for drinking by which time it is usually at least ten years old, although it continues to improve for many years more.

Chateau Palmer, 1986

Margaux 3me Cru Classe
93 Points - Wine Journal

*** 93 Points Wine Journal ***
Reviews "This is one of the great Palmers of the 1980s, though it is several years since I last encountered it. Here, there is one word that springs to mind-class. Wonderful definition, a little reserved at first, but wonderfully defined with cedar, sandalwood and cigar box. The palate has firm tannins as you would expect from an -86, but it is married with Margaux femininity, leading to a lovely, supple finish with graphite and blackberry lingering on the back palate. Superb. Drink now-2018. Tasted November 2009." Neil Martin, Wine Journal

The finish is smooth, mellow, and reflective of fully mature Southern Rhône.

Smaller houses such as Arnevels are rarely seen today, making this a curiosity from the 1980s Châteauneuf landscape. While not a “grand” name, it offers both drinking pleasure and a slice of history.
