Barolo, 1966
Luigi Calissano - Riserva Speciale
Appearance: pale garnet or amber colour, with a broad, tawny rim.
Nose: intensely aromatic and layered. Expect a bouquet of dried roses, potpourri, and old leather, typical of aged Barolo. Earthy and savoury notes like truffle, underbrush, and wet leaves would likely be prominent, along with hints of tobacco, cigar box, and perhaps a touch of menthol or eucalyptus.
Palate: smooth and harmonious, with tannins that have softened to a velvety texture. The acidity, while still present, would provide a balance that keeps the wine lively despite its age. Flavours of dried cherries, cranberries, and figs would dominate, intertwined with savoury elements like dried herbs, leather, and truffle. …

Barolo, 1965
Serio Battista Borgogno
The 1965 Barolo from Seri Battista Borgogno is a rare collector’s bottle, reflecting a traditional era of winemaking in Piedmont. Borgogno is a historic name often associated with classic, long-lived Barolo, made using extended maceration and aging in large neutral oak. Though not as widely known as some of the region’s major houses, wines bearing the Borgogno name—particularly from this period—are deeply traditional and often surprisingly resilient.
In the glass, the wine likely shows a pale garnet color with strong orange and brick hues on the rim, signaling full maturity. The bouquet would now be dominated by tertiary aromas: dried roses, tar, forest floor, antique leather, and soft spice. …

Barolo, 1965
Fratelli Berteletti
The 1965 Barolo from Fratelli Berteletti is a rare and atmospheric wine from a traditional, small-scale producer rooted in the heart of Piedmont. Wines from this era were typically made with long maceration times and aged in large oak botti, prioritizing structure and authenticity over early accessibility. This bottle offers a glimpse into the heritage of Barolo, shaped by time and tradition.
In the glass, the wine shows a soft garnet hue fading into amber at the rim—classic signs of a mature Nebbiolo. The nose is delicate and layered, presenting aromas of dried rose petals, leather, sweet spices, and undergrowth. …

Bertolino
The 1965 Barolo from Bertolino is a fascinating relic from a classic era of Piedmont winemaking, showcasing the old-world charm of traditional Nebbiolo. Bertolino, a lesser-known but regionally respected producer at the time, crafted wines in the customary fashion—extended skin contact, aging in large neutral oak, and a focus on structure and longevity rather than fruit-forward immediacy.
In appearance, the wine would present a light garnet color with orange-brick hues at the rim, revealing its advanced age and maturity. The bouquet is likely ethereal and nuanced, offering notes of dried rose petals, leather, old wood, and earthy forest floor. …

Barolo, 1965
Giordano
The 1965 Barolo from Giordano represents a rare and intriguing example of traditional Nebbiolo winemaking from mid-century Piedmont. Giordano, known more today for broad commercial distribution, produced classically structured Barolo in the 1960s, often with a rustic charm rooted in long fermentation, aging in large oak casks, and minimal intervention. This bottle offers insight into both the vintage and a traditional style that has largely faded from modern production.
Visually, the wine would appear light garnet with a translucent core and amber-brick rim, indicative of its advanced age. The nose likely reveals a delicate mix of tertiary notes: dried cherry, faded rose petals, old leather, pipe tobacco, and damp earth. …

Barolo, 1964
Marchesi Villadoria - Riserva Speciale
Opened, decanted and 5-6 hours before dinner. Garnet colour and quite clear. The wine evolved over time to ripe cherry marinated in alcohol, and some spices, like pepper and clove . Structure was still alive with bright acidity. Still enjoyable and a tribute to this vintage's endurance. We had a good time, for sure.
This wine comes from the Marenca and Rivette estate, besides Margheria, and now for the last 40+ years in the hand of a famous winery producing there extremely premium wines. This explains the longevity, so there is an extra point for age-worthiness of this 60 year old beauty. CellarTracker Review February 2023. …
